Invasive Plant Removal – Mill Pasture Preserve

February 5, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

GLCT director and Property Steward Melissa Robinson is organizing an effort to begin clearing a potpourri of foreign invasive plants from the Mill Pasture property. Located on the corner of Rt. 1 and Long Hill Road, this overlooked property is crossed by three branches of the West River, and infested with oriental bittersweet and honeysuckle, as well as multiflora rose and autumn olive. Melissa has hacked a path in from Mill Road and is asking for help in this initial effort to control some of these plants. The main goal is to cut and treat the invasive vines that are growing up the trees, but with a big enough turnout effort can be put into removing other plants as well. If you’d like to help, please bring along heavy garden tools, such as loppers and hand saws. We’ll have a chainsaw or two, but expect most of this work will be performed with hand tools. Heavy gloves and clothing will help protect you from thorns while waterproof boots are needed because of the wet soil. Please join us if you can. Entrance and parking is on Mill Road with parking along the side of the road across from the Tile Shop and the VFW. Raindate: 25th of February @ 1PM. [est 2 – 3 hours]

Rain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties, so if you have questions about the schedule, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events, so if you’re late and want people to wait, give him a call.
