Mowing is for the Birds

A number of land trust properties are mowed rather than allowed to revert to forestland. Unless the acquisition of a field or meadow called for another arrangement, mowing is postponed until after August 1 each year to protect grassland birds that nest on the ground, including eastern meadowlarks, upland sandpipers and bobolinks. Griffith June Bequest

The land trust is the recipient of a generous bequest from Griffith June, who passed away last September. An avid hiker, June left his home on Durham Road across from Lake Quonnipaug to the land trust. The land trust, in keeping with the terms of the bequest, plans to sell the property and use the much-needed proceeds for land acquisition.

Land Trust Honored for Protecting Broomstick Ledges

The Guilford Land Conservation Trust has been honored by the Connecticut Land Conservation Council for its landmark protection of the Broomstick Ledges area. At the council’s annual conference in April, the land trust received the Award for Outstanding Land Acquisition Effort.
