SUMMARY:Blaze And Trail Maintenance - Hoadley Creek - Granite Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Reports of confusing and ‘difficult to follow’ blazing along the Hoadley Creek trails\, just south of Solstice\, have us walking these trails to assess their condition and repair where necessary. If you’d like to help\, you should bring along a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blaze … we’ll have both the blaze materials as well as nails. Please dress for autumn conditions\, a good set of work gloves and decent boots and meet us at the Granite Road trailhead\, parking in the little lot off to the right side of the Solstice (formerly the Gables) residents parking. This is at the very end of Granite Rd.\, off of Moose Hill Rd. [est 1-1/2 to 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Stewardship Workshop - Dudley Barrows Woods - Dudley Farms Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Not exactly a work party\, we’re holding a field meeting for our Property Stewards to talk about property oversight\, and the sort of things they should be on the look-out for when they walk their property. We’ll be focusing primarily on boundary monitoring\, reviewing the marking the Land Trust uses to identify the land\, as well as the sort of encroachment problems commonly seen. If you’re interested in taking on a Property Stewardship role\, we welcome your participation\, and hope you’ll sign up to Steward one of our many properties. Please meet at the small kiosk in front of the Mungar Barn at Dudley Farms. (Contact Rob Valley in advance and he’ll send you the Geo-located map we’ll be using\, as well as instructions for using it with the Avenza phone app.) [est 2 to 3 hours]

SUMMARY:Trail Rerouting - Westwoods: Lower Moose Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:With the removal of the Eversource distribution lines several years ago\, the utility is no longer clearing their right-of-way\, and some of the trails crossing the low areas have become very overgrown. The Yellow Square is a particularly good example of this\, and we’re using this opportunity to move it to higher ground where it will be both easier to maintain and passable in wet weather. This won’t be an easy job\, as we’ll be cutting a new pathway along a cliff edge. We’ll need chainsaws\, and loppers\, and Paul will bring along the Land Trust brush cutter to help clear the rose and cat-brier. Heavy gloves\, boots and work pants are a must\, and bring along heavy hand tools to use. Please meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. The lot can get filled on Saturday mornings\, so please use street parking on Landon’s Way if it’s too crowded. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Neck River North - Seeding A New Meadow - Nortontown Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Eversource clear-cut a large section of this small property last autumn\, and our Property Steward has decided to assist nature by seeding this former forest floor with native grasses before foreign invasive plants advance into the area. The Land Trust has provided both seed and hand seed spreaders. and we’re looking for help in broadcasting the seed and lightly raking it into the forest litter. Light garden gloves and a hand rake are all that you’ll need to bring along. Please meet us at the Neck River North trail entrance\, just north of 725 Nortontown Road and south of the intersection with Squaw Lane. [est 2 to 2-1/2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Red Triangle Trail Relocation - Westwoods Lower Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Last spring\, Cooper Woods and Jackson Howard earned their BSA Eagle awards relocating very wet portions of the Red Triangle Trail\, just east of Moose Hill Road. This work party will complete that work\, extending the trail along a dry and less steep path\, and permanently closing the old trail sections. The relocation has been flagged with survey tape\, so on this work party we’ll be clearing a few deadfalls from the path\, limbing trees where necessary and posting blazes. We’ll then remove old blazing from the original trail and post our ‘Trail Closed’ signs at either end. Paul will have his chainsaw for the big stuff\, but please bring along garden clippers\, loppers and/or a hand saw to help with clearing. (If time and enthusiasm permits\, we’ll also try hauling some surplus dock sections down to the wet portions of the Yellow Trail). Please meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. Use street parking on Landon’s Way if it’s too crowded. [est. 2 – 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. SUMMARY:Boardwalk Construction on Westwoods Red Triangle Trail
DESCRIPTION:Back in 2017\, WWTC member Ellsworth Matthias directed the efforts to rebuild a crumbling section of the Red Rectangle Trail\, just south of the (former) Eversource power lines. While this work remains in good shape\, the elevated section to the east has greatly deteriorated\, and we plan to bridge this area on this work party. We expect to bring the materials close to the site via the wood roads the Blue Rectangle and Yellow Triangle follow. But we’ll need to hand carry them down the foot trails. So we’ll need help with both the construction\, as well as the hauling effort. WE NEED A GREAT DEAL OF HELP TO GET THIS WORK COMPLETED IN A SINGLE DAY! So please\, consider joining us … even for only a couple of hours. There will be plenty of work: hauling\, trail clearing\, chainsawing and basic carpentry. We’ll have lots of tools\, but please bring your own\, if possible. Plan to meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. [est 4 to 5 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house.
