SUMMARY:Westwoods Plankwalk Maintenance at Peddlers Road
DESCRIPTION:At the September WWTC meeting Paul noted a broken plank on the walk\, so we’ll attend to that today.  And while we’re in the area\, we’ll take a look at the overgrowth of an invasive plant that’s been reported\, and cut that back as best we can.  Paul’s pretty sure we have the required materials already at the northern end of the Great Marsh\, so we’ll only need to haul from there.  We’ll bring the basic tools for the work\, but extra hammers and pry-bars will be useful.  And to help with the invasive plant control\, a pair of garden clippers and loppers will be useful too.  Please meet us at the Peddlers Road trail entrance @ 10AM. SUMMARY:Eastwoods/Nutplains - Closing the Old Connecting Trail at Leatherman Road
DESCRIPTION:Over the summer the caretakers of the National Scenic Trail\, CT Forest & Parks\, built a 250 foot elevated plank walk across a wide wetland on the boundary between GLCT’s Eastwoods and Nutplains Wood properties.  And in August\, the Town’s Land Stewards cleared and blazed the new trail across the Balestracci property; providing a really pleasant cross trail between Eastwoods and Nutplains.  All this work allows us now to close the wet and difficult to negotiate (and maintain) connecting trail that we’ve been putting up with for many years.  This work party will be posting our ‘Trail Closed’ signs at the trail ends\, removing all the trail signage we can find\, and blocking the trail with branches to discourage continued use.  You’ll need nothing more than a set of gloves and wire snippers to cut off blazes.  Paul will have some gray spray paint to cover old blazes.  And if we get done early\, we’ll take a nice walk on the new bridge and trail and enjoy the colors of autumn.  Please meet us at the Leatherman Road access to the East River Preserve.  This is east of the Land Trust entrance to Eastwoods (which is on East Bearhouse Hill Road.  There’s lots of street parking\, but please don’t obstruct the road: we recommend parking on nearby Edwin Court. SUMMARY:Installing Plastic Trail Blazes at Westwoods Three Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:With Cooper Woods finishing up his Eagle Project on the west side of the Red Triangle Trail this past spring\, we’re finally getting around to posting blazes along the entire Red Triangle trail.  Today we’ll be starting on the eastern terminus of that trail and working north to the old power line crossing.  If you’d like to help blaze\, you should bring along a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes.  We’ll have both the cut blaze materials as well as nails.   Please dress for autumn conditions and meet us at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods.  When you park be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. DESCRIPTION:The Bimblers Bluff 50k is an off road foot race that starts at Guilford Lakes School\, 40 Maupas Rd\, Guilford and passes through several inter-connected woodland preserves in southern Connecticut. Consisting entirely of rolling forest roads or single track that can be extremely rocky\, the course will provide a true test of the runner’s fitness and mental stamina. DESCRIPTION:When the new Bog Bridge was built by CF&P during the summer the lumber from the original bridge was saved so it could be recycled into future projects. Unfortunately\, it was left at a trail deep in Eastwoods\, and we need to now pull it out and move it to its new location. To do this we’ll be meeting at the Podunk Road entrance to Eastwoods and plan to take a 4×4 down along the Eversource access road to make the job a bit easier. So we’ll need people to help load the truck at the Eastwoods end\, and people to help unload at a couple of places at the Westwoods end\, later that morning. Gloves & work boots are all you’ll be needing beyond lots of enthusiasm. Meet us at the Podunk Road entrance to Eastwoods\, directly across from Orcutt Drive. Parking is limited in front of the gate\, so please park along Orcutt if need be.
