SUMMARY:Walk ’n Work Hike - Kampmeyer: Laurel Hollow Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Our seventh ‘walk ’n work party’\, and another chance to mix of hiking and caring for our trials.  This month we’ll take a walk around Kampmeyer South\, crossing the old Trolley bed and Swamp Board-walk\, and looping around high-lands to the west.  We expect to be cutting vines and overhanging branches\, and getting the trails into good shape for the coming summer\, with plenty of time to view the last of the woodland flowers before they’re shaded out by the coming canopy. We’ll just be working with hand tools … no chainsaws or heavy equipment are allowed on these work parties.  So just wear comfortable shoes and bring along your favorite gardening tools. Loppers and clippers are both useful\, so both are recommended … but if you have some special garden equipment\, bring it along and try it out.   Please meet us at the Laurel Hollow cul-de-sac entrance @ 10AM\, just off West Lake Avenue.   [est 2  – 2 -1/2 hours]

SUMMARY:Westwoods Plankwalk Maintenance at Peddlers Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Our April ‘walk ’n work party’ identified several areas of the boardwalk that need attention\, and we’re planning to do that work today.  Also\, if we have good attendance\, we’d also like to have a crew remove several infestations of multi-flora rose recently reported in the wetlands.  If you’d like to help us with either of these tasks\, please join us at the work party.  We’ll have the basic tools and materials for rebuilding sections of the plank walk\, but extra hammers and prybars will be useful\, so please bring them along if you can.  If you’d like to help with the rose\, please bring loppers\, clippers and a good pair of boots to keep your feet dry.  Please meet us at the Peddlers Road trail entrance @ 10AM. SUMMARY:Dudley Barrows Installation of Trail Posts at Renee's Way
DESCRIPTION:GHS teacher Dave Hackett and his talented students have constructed cedar trail entrance posts for a number of our trail entrances and we’ll be installing two of them today\, one at the entrance to the Red Triangle Trail\, the other on GLCT’s Little West Pond property\, off of Gina Lane.   We’ll be digging post holes\, and have the basic heavy equipment to do this work\, but welcome additional hands and tools.  Gloves and good work boots are a must\, but if you have any specialized post hole diggers or shovels\, please bring them along too.  Meet us at the green gate at the former Eversource power line crossing on Moose Hill road … it’s about 1/2 way between the two Moose Hill Road trail entrances.  [est 2 to 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event.  We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. DESCRIPTION:A deadfall reported by property steward Michele Millham needs to be cleared from the trail.  Mostly chainsaw work\,  but help is always needed to support our sawyers\, so please join us if you can.  We’ll have a saw\, but please bring along a pair of heavy gloves and perhaps a set of loppers if you can make it.  Please meet us at the Neck River North trail entrance\, just north of house number 725 and south of the intersection with Squaw Lane.  The work is within a hundred feet or so of the road. SUMMARY:East River Preserve - Beech Leaf Disease - Field Identification and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bob Marra of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, will be leading a field trip to educate us about this disease.  Recently found in Connecticut\, not a lot is know about this organism and the disease that it causes … including knowledge as to how it spreads\, where it currently is in Connecticut and how it might be treated.  Dr. Marra has identified an area of infestation that’s fairly close to the trailhead\, and we’ll learn to identify symptoms\, and how to best respond when we encounter other occurrences of the disease.  Parking is limited at this trail entrance\, so please car pool\, and consider parking at Duck Hole Road (just north of the trail entrance) and walking down to the trail head.
