SUMMARY:Stewardship Workshop - Dudley Barrows Woods - Dudley Farms Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Not exactly a work party\, we’re holding a field meeting for our Property Stewards to talk about property oversight\, and the sort of things they should be on the look-out for when they walk their property. We’ll be focusing primarily on boundary monitoring\, reviewing the marking the Land Trust uses to identify the land\, as well as the sort of encroachment problems commonly seen. If you’re interested in taking on a Property Stewardship role\, we welcome your participation\, and hope you’ll sign up to Steward one of our many properties. Please meet at the small kiosk in front of the Mungar Barn at Dudley Farms. (Contact Rob Valley in advance and he’ll send you the Geo-located map we’ll be using\, as well as instructions for using it with the Avenza phone app.) [est 2 to 3 hours]

SUMMARY:Blaze And Trail Maintenance - Hoadley Creek - Granite Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Reports of confusing and ‘difficult to follow’ blazing along the Hoadley Creek trails\, just south of Solstice\, have us walking these trails to assess their condition and repair where necessary. If you’d like to help\, you should bring along a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blaze … we’ll have both the blaze materials as well as nails. Please dress for autumn conditions\, a good set of work gloves and decent boots and meet us at the Granite Road trailhead\, parking in the little lot off to the right side of the Solstice (formerly the Gables) residents parking. This is at the very end of Granite Rd.\, off of Moose Hill Rd. SUMMARY:Hauling Lumber From Eastwoods to Westwoods - Eastwoods: Podunk Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:When the new Bog Bridge was built by CF&P during the summer the lumber from the original bridge was saved so it could be recycled into future projects. Unfortunately\, it was left at a trail deep in Eastwoods\, and we need to now pull it out and move it to its new location. To do this we’ll be meeting at the Podunk Road entrance to Eastwoods and plan to take a 4×4 down along the Eversource access road to make the job a bit easier. So we’ll need people to help load the truck at the Eastwoods end\, and people to help unload at a couple of places at the Westwoods end\, later that morning. Gloves & work boots are all you’ll be needing beyond lots of enthusiasm. Meet us at the Podunk Road entrance to Eastwoods\, directly across from Orcutt Drive. Parking is limited in front of the gate\, so please park along Orcutt if need be. [est 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Bimbler's Bluff 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Bimblers Bluff 50k is an off road foot race that starts at Guilford Lakes School\, 40 Maupas Rd\, Guilford and passes through several inter-connected woodland preserves in southern Connecticut. Consisting entirely of rolling forest roads or single track that can be extremely rocky\, the course will provide a true test of the runner’s fitness and mental stamina. The course is unusual for an event of this type in Connecticut as it doesn’t require participants complete the same loop multiple times. \nRead more and register here: https://bimblersound.com/WordPress/bluff/

SUMMARY:Installing Plastic Trail Blazes at Westwoods Three Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:With Cooper Woods finishing up his Eagle Project on the west side of the Red Triangle Trail this past spring\, we’re finally getting around to posting blazes along the entire Red Triangle trail. Today we’ll be starting on the eastern terminus of that trail and working north to the old power line crossing. If you’d like to help blaze\, you should bring along a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes. We’ll have both the cut blaze materials as well as nails. Please dress for autumn conditions and meet us at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods. When you park be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. SUMMARY:Eastwoods/Nutplains - Closing the Old Connecting Trail at Leatherman Road
DESCRIPTION:Over the summer the caretakers of the National Scenic Trail\, CT Forest & Parks\, built a 250 foot elevated plank walk across a wide wetland on the boundary between GLCT’s Eastwoods and Nutplains Wood properties. And in August\, the Town’s Land Stewards cleared and blazed the new trail across the Balestracci property; providing a really pleasant cross trail between Eastwoods and Nutplains. All this work allows us now to close the wet and difficult to negotiate (and maintain) connecting trail that we’ve been putting up with for many years. This work party will be posting our ‘Trail Closed’ signs at the trail ends\, removing all the trail signage we can find\, and blocking the trail with branches to discourage continued use. You’ll need nothing more than a set of gloves and wire snippers to cut off blazes. Paul will have some gray spray paint to cover old blazes. And if we get done early\, we’ll take a nice walk on the new bridge and trail and enjoy the colors of autumn. Please meet us at the Leatherman Road access to the East River Preserve. This is east of the Land Trust entrance to Eastwoods (which is on East Bearhouse Hill Road. There’s lots of street parking\, but please don’t obstruct the road: we recommend parking on nearby Edwin Court. [est 1 – 1-1/2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Westwoods Plankwalk Maintenance at Peddlers Road
DESCRIPTION:At the September WWTC meeting Paul noted a broken plank on the walk\, so we’ll attend to that today. And while we’re in the area\, we’ll take a look at the overgrowth of an invasive plant that’s been reported\, and cut that back as best we can. Paul’s pretty sure we have the required materials already at the northern end of the Great Marsh\, so we’ll only need to haul from there. We’ll bring the basic tools for the work\, but extra hammers and pry-bars will be useful. And to help with the invasive plant control\, a pair of garden clippers and loppers will be useful too. Please meet us at the Peddlers Road trail entrance @ 10AM. SUMMARY:Neck River North - Stone and Tree Work at Nortontown Road
DESCRIPTION:Our primary goal today is to add a couple of big stepping stones to an existing river crossing. This will connect our Neck River North trail to the Blinnshed Ridge and Neck River Trails managed by the Madison Land Trust. As a secondary effort\, we need to cut up some deadfalls on the trails. So we need a chainsaw or two\, and a number of people with pry-bars or crowbars who can roll rocks and don’t mind getting their feet a bit wet. We’ll have a saw\, a couple of dynamite and crow bars\, but please bring along a pair of heavy gloves and water proof (and fairly high) boots\, if you have them. Please meet us at the Neck River North trail entrance\, just north of house number 725 and south of the intersection with Squaw Lane. [est 2 to 2-1/2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Guilford Fair Parade 2024
DESCRIPTION:Okay\, so it really isn’t any work. But as a kick-off for the 2024-25 trail season\, the parade is an annual event for The Land Trust and WestWoods Trails Committee to meet and greet the community and remind Guilford citizens that there are people behind the organization. You’re invited to join us this Saturday as we participate in this uniquely Guilford event! Meet at the Land Trust Office at 44 Boston Street (the little building behind the Guilford Savings Bank) at 9:30 to collect signs and banners. Wear your GLCT or WWTC tee shirt and/or cap\, if you have one and it’s not too disreputable. But if you need a new one\, we’ll have one to give you. [est 2 hours]

SUMMARY:Plankwalk Maintenance - Peddlers Road
DESCRIPTION:We didn’t get a big turn-out for last month’s plank walk workparty\, so we’re hoping more people come out today so we can complete the repairs on two ‘soft’ sections of this venerable walkway. SUMMARY:Rebuilding Water Crossings - Sam Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Last month we successfully installed stepping stones on a water crossing\, and with what we’ve learned we plan to do similar work on ‘problem’ areas of the White Circle and Green Circle trails. We may again use stones for this\, but will be prepared to use available slabs of wood if that can be made to work. We will have a small collection of pry-bars and levers with us\, but please bring any tool you have which could be helpful\, along with good work gloves and strong boots. Paul will bring his chainsaw. Please meet us at the Sam Hill Entrance to Westwoods. [est 2-1/2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Native Plants in West Woods: Identification\, Value\, and Availability
DESCRIPTION:Landscape architect Crystal Gaudio will identify a variety of native trees\, shrubs and herbaceous plants common to Westwoods and available for purchase locally. She will discuss their identifying characteristics\, ecological value\, and optimal growing conditions. By focusing on native plants common to our area\, Gaudio hopes to enrich people’s experience while hiking in Westwoods as well as offer ideas for plants they may be able to grow on their properties. Native plantings are also essential to species that depend on them for food and shelter.

SUMMARY:Quarry Guided Hike
DESCRIPTION:Explore the west side of Westwoods with GLCT member Stacey Smith. This wonderful hike scampers up and through a boulder field follows a stream in a beautiful\, mossy canyon\, and then leads to views of the quarry in Branford. The boulder field adds an element of challenge and intrigue\, perfect for those who enjoy a bit of rock scrambling. While not a flat hike\, the varied terrain and rock scrambling opportunities make it an engaging experience for outdoor enthusiasts\, especially young ones. Meet in the little lot on the right side across from the Solstice Living Center parking lot. This is at the end of Granite Road\, off of Moose Hill Road. More than a drizzle cancels the hike. SUMMARY:Cutting/Clearing Trees and Spreading Woodchips - Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:This is a continuation of the work from last month on the Sunset Creek Meadow. First off\, we’ll be cutting up the trees Patrick Perdu dropped last month\, and hauling the wood and branches to the road. This will allow us to mow the fields later this year. If time permits\, we’ll also spread out two piles of wood chips to complete covering the area overrun with invasive mugwort. If you’d like to help with the trees\, please bring along a chainsaw. A shovel\, pitchfork and rake will be useful to spread the chips. if you have a good sized wheelbarrow or garden cart\, please bring it too … it will be very useful for both hauling wood to the curb or moving wood chips. Please meet us at the Sunset Creek Road cul-de-sac (the road is directly across from the Cox School entrance on Three Mile Course). There’s plenty of parking at the cul-de-sac\, and more along the road. [est 2 – 2-1/2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Planting Native Plants - East River/White Birch Drive
DESCRIPTION:Last autumn\, Eversource clear-cut their transmission right-of-way all across the town\, and the small property the Land Trust owns on the East River was completely cleared of tall vegetation. Eversource has provided us with low-growing native plants we can replant with\, and this work party will get these young plants into the ground. The plants are small: either plugs or 1 gallon containers\, but we have about 60 of them to get established. If you’d like to help us\, please bring a shovel and trowel\, along with work gloves and good boots\, and meet us at the southern end of White Birch Drive. We’ll be on the southern side of the stone bridge over the East River\, about 800ft from the intersection of White Birch and Nut Plains Road. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Installing Cardboard for Sheet Mulch at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:On this work party we will begin implementation of an alternative approach to mugwort management using cardboard and wood chips and “sheet mulch” two designated test areas. Like with the occultation at the Spencer’s Creek field\, this treatment should also kill or severely weaken the mugwort rhizomes\, but over the course of a couple of seasons. We’ll finish up any cardboard prep work we didn’t get done during the week\, and then spread the cardboard sheets over our flagged areas. This will set the stage for a dropping of wood chips sometime the following week. If you’d like to help\, please meet us at the Sunset Creek Road cut-de-sac (the road is directly across from the Cox School entrance on Three Mile Course). There’s plenty of parking at the cut-de-sac\, and more along the road. SUMMARY:Prepping Cardboard for Sheet Mulch at Spencer’s Creek
DESCRIPTION:On both these afternoons we’ll be preparing cardboard so it can be used to control the mugwort on the Sunset Creek Meadow. Because the cardboard is buried under wood chips\, we need to remove all the ‘add ons’ (mostly plastic tape and staples) so we don’t end up contaminating the soil.
