To record this information in the field\, we plan to use the Avenza Map app\, which is available on both the Apple and Android handhelds or tablets paired with Loop 4 trail map.  For the next month\, this map is available as a free download from the Avenza Store.  Just search on ‘Westwoods Loop 4’ and you should find it (it’s not there just now\, but it will surely be available the week of the 10th.)   If you’d like to add your expertise to our land review\, download the free version of the Avenza app from the Apple or Android store\, load the map\, put on some nice comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket\, and join our walk in the woods. SUMMARY:Loop 3 Trail Work at Westwoods 3 Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:The second of Loop 3 work parties.  Today we plan to pull two 12 ft bridges out of the dirt and mud they’re sunk into\, and place them on cedar or locust sleepers.  We also plan to haul in a third 12ft bridge\, which will span another wet area that’s formed immediately to the south.  We’ll have ironed out the details of this work at the work party on the 1st\, and arranged to have the third bridge delivered to the trailhead.  But we’ll need many hands to haul it about 1/8 of a mile to the site\, along with the sleeper materials.  Like last week\, it’s a lot of work we’re expecting to accomplish.  Bring any heavy tools you think would be useful and (again) meet at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods.  If there isn’t room at the cul-de-sac\, please park down the road. SUMMARY:Loop 3 Trail Work at Westwoods 3 Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:Our inspection of Loop 3 on the 15th uncovered a number of issues we plan to address on the first two work parties of this month.  Today\, we’ll be (1) relocating three sections of trails (two on hiker created by-passes\, and a third where we’ll clear a dryer path nearby)\, (2) Try to drain a wet area on the Blue Rectangle trail by creating a clearing to the south\, (3) Overpaint some graffiti at the Indian Cave\, (4) Blaze two side-trails (one with Orange/Red blazes\, the other with a Orange Square)\, and (5) add some stepping stones to cross a short wet section of the Orange Circle trail.  We’ll also explore extracting two 12ft bridges that have sunk into the dirt\, in preparation for our work next week.  So there’s much to do and we ask you come prepared with the tools of your particular trade.  For trail relocation\, we’ll need a couple of chainsaws\, and a lopper or two.  Paul will have one saw\, and he’ll bring the signs for closing trails\, and posts (and post hammer) we’ll need to mark off the closed sections.  He’ll also bring the blaze materials and nails.  For the trenching\, stone work and excavating we’ll need heavy tools:  pry-bars\, shovels\, a maddox or grub axe.  Probably best to toss what you have in the car and we’ll decide what to bring in at the trailhead.  In short\, there’s much to do and a wide range of work\, the more hands\, the more we’ll get done.   Dress for mild winter conditions\, and expect it to be a bit muddy.  Plan to meet at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods.  When you park be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. SUMMARY:Green Rectangle Trail Relocation - Hoadley Creek Granite Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:At the turn of the year\, Wesley Beeman from the Branford Land Trust proposed rerouting the Green Rectangle trail just before it crosses the town line.  The original woods road is wet and deeply eroded and hikers have long charted their own paths around this section.  As proposed\, our work today will open a path to the south that will be easier to traverse and less inclined to erosion.  The relocation has been flagged with survey tape\, so on this workparty we’ll be clearing a few deadfalls from the path\, limbing trees where necessary and posting blazes.  We’ll then remove old blazing from the original trail and post our ‘Trail Closed’ signs at either end.  Paul will have his chainsaw for the big stuff\, but please bring along garden clippers\, loppers and/or a hand saw to help with clearing.  Please dress for winter conditions\, a good set of work gloves and decent boots and meet us at the Granite Road trailhead\, parking in the little lot off to the right side of the Solstice (formerly the Gables) residents parking.  This is at the very end of Granite Rd.\, off of Moose Hill Rd. DESCRIPTION:Our inspection of Trail Loop 2 on the 25th showed just a couple of small water crossing problems that we expect to address today.  What we plan is to shift some stepping stones that are a little wobbly\, and perhaps move/roll some additional stones from the trail edges to make the crossing easier.   If you’d like to help\, bring along a pryer or crowbar and perhaps a few wooden blocks that can be used as fulcrums or spacers.   That and a pair of heavy gloves and good boots are all you’ll need.  After this work is completed\, we expect to return on the white circle trail\, and discuss plans for improving an important water crossing.  Please meet us at the Sam Hill Entrance to Westwoods. DESCRIPTION:WWTC member Kevin Mabon has generously donated weather resistant materials from a deck he’s deconstructing\, and we’ve scheduled this work party to remove stubborn hardware\, cut away unusable sections and then haul the materials to the GLCT storage area at Spencer’s Creek.  We’ll need people to:  pull nails from framing hardware\, rip or crosscut the rotten sections and load prepped boards into pickup.  Then we’ll need a crew to follow and unload the truck.  Useful tools to bring are: Gloves\, Manly claw Hammers\, Crow’s foot nail pullers.  (A flat bar doesn’t really cut it\, it’s too thick to get under the nails)\, Pickup truck (we only need one … please contact Paul if you can bring your’s)\, Vise grips\, impact driver with T30 bit for pulling screws.  Please meet us at Kevin’s house at 705 West Lake Ave (Just south of the Kampmeyer Laurel Hollow Drive trail-head\, on the east side of West Lake Ave) … there’s room in his driveway for about 5 cars if we park carefully. DESCRIPTION:Our inspection of Trail Loop 1 on the 14th resulted in a nice list of projects which will make the trail more pleasant to use\, and help with our long term maintenance.  This includes rerouting some sections of the trail\, moving some obstacles\, and posting signs to close off some areas.  We’ll be beginning this work today\, and since the bigger slice of chainsaw work is just south of the Lost Lake overlook\, we’re using the TCR entrance for access.  If you’ll be on the chainsaw crew\, see the 21st for what to bring.  If you’d like to help with the trail clearing and closures\, bring work gloves and a small tool belt with places for nails and a hammer.  Loppers or a small hand saw could also be helpful. DESCRIPTION:A follow-up for work over the summer on the Sunset Creek Meadow.  First off\, we’ll spread out a pile of wood chips to complete covering the area overrun with invasive mugwort.   Then we’ll limb some of the standing trees on the eastern side of the meadow to make mowing over the winter both easier and more effective.  If you’d like to help with the trees\, please bring along a chainsaw.  A shovel\, pitchfork and rake will be useful to spread the chips.  if you have a good sized wheelbarrow or garden cart\, please bring it too … it will be very useful for moving wood chips further than can be tossed. SUMMARY:Boardwalk Construction on Westwoods Red Triangle Trail
DESCRIPTION:Back in 2017\, WWTC member Ellsworth Matthias directed the efforts to rebuild a crumbling section of the Red Rectangle Trail\, just south of the (former) Eversource power lines.  While this work remains in good shape\, the elevated section to the east has greatly deteriorated\, and we plan to bridge this area on this work party.  We expect to bring the materials close to the site via the wood roads the Blue Rectangle and Yellow Triangle follow.  But we’ll need to hand carry them down the foot trails.  So we’ll need help with both the construction\, as well as the hauling effort.  WE NEED A GREAT DEAL OF HELP TO GET THIS WORK COMPLETED IN A SINGLE DAY!  So please\, consider joining us … even for only a couple of hours.  There will be plenty of work: hauling\, trail clearing\, chainsawing and basic carpentry.  We’ll have lots of tools\, but please bring your own\, if possible.  Plan to meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. SUMMARY:Red Triangle Trail Relocation - Westwoods Lower Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Last spring\, Cooper Woods and Jackson Howard earned their BSA Eagle awards relocating very wet portions of the Red Triangle Trail\, just east of Moose Hill Road.  This work party will complete that work\, extending the trail along a dry and less steep path\, and permanently closing the old trail sections.  The relocation has been flagged with survey tape\, so on this work party we’ll be clearing a few deadfalls from the path\, limbing trees where necessary and posting blazes.  We’ll then remove old blazing from the original trail and post our ‘Trail Closed’ signs at either end.  Paul will have his chainsaw for the big stuff\, but please bring along garden clippers\, loppers and/or a hand saw to help with clearing.  (If time and enthusiasm permits\, we’ll also try hauling some surplus dock sections down to the wet portions of the Yellow Trail). DESCRIPTION:With the removal of the Eversource distribution lines several years ago\, the utility is no longer clearing their right-of-way\, and some of the trails crossing the low areas have  become very overgrown.  The Yellow Square is a particularly good example of this\, and we’re using this opportunity to move it to higher ground where it will be both easier to maintain and passable in wet weather.  This won’t be an easy job\, as we’ll be cutting a new pathway along a cliff edge.  We’ll need chainsaws\, and loppers\, and Paul will bring along the Land Trust brush cutter to help clear the rose and cat-brier.   Heavy gloves\, boots and work pants are a must\, and bring along heavy hand tools to use.  Please meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. DESCRIPTION:When the new Bog Bridge was built by CF&P during the summer the lumber from the original bridge was saved so it could be recycled into future projects. Unfortunately\, it was left at a trail deep in Eastwoods\, and we need to now pull it out and move it to its new location. To do this we’ll be meeting at the Podunk Road entrance to Eastwoods and plan to take a 4×4 down along the Eversource access road to make the job a bit easier. So we’ll need people to help load the truck at the Eastwoods end\, and people to help unload at a couple of places at the Westwoods end\, later that morning. Gloves & work boots are all you’ll be needing beyond lots of enthusiasm. Meet us at the Podunk Road entrance to Eastwoods\, directly across from Orcutt Drive. Parking is limited in front of the gate\, so please park along Orcutt if need be. DESCRIPTION:The Bimblers Bluff 50k is an off road foot race that starts at Guilford Lakes School\, 40 Maupas Rd\, Guilford and passes through several inter-connected woodland preserves in southern Connecticut. Consisting entirely of rolling forest roads or single track that can be extremely rocky\, the course will provide a true test of the runner’s fitness and mental stamina.
