SUMMARY:Loop 9 Trail Work - Westwoods: Dunk Rock Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:We pretty much finished the trail reconstruction work on Loop 9 at the 11th of April workparty\, but now need to haul in a few wooden platforms to complete the job. Paul Sanders will be bringing these to the trailhead\, but we need help to haul them into the Green Rectangle trail. If you’d like to help\, good gloves\, boots and a strong back are all you’ll need to bring. Dress for early spring conditions\, and meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. [est 1 – 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:The Extraordinary Caterpillar
DESCRIPTION:The Extraordinary Caterpillar is a 60-minute documentary that uncovers the vital role caterpillars play in sustaining the natural world. Through stunning visuals and engaging storytelling\, the film reveals how these small but mighty creatures support birds\, pollinators\, and the entire food web – while depending on native plants for their survival. \nFeaturing Doug Tallamy (Homegrown National Park) and Sam Jaffe (The Caterpillar Lab)\, the film highlights the powerful truth: although over 98% of life on Earth is smaller than a bee\, human-designed landscapes often overlook the systems that keep ecosystems healthy. \nFollow scientists and community advocates as they reveal the fascinating world of these tiny but essential organisms – and why they matter more than we think. \nThis program is free and open to all\, and is co-sponsored with The Guilford Land Conservation Trust\, but space is limited. \nPre-Registration Requested

SUMMARY:Loop 12 Trail Work - Westwoods: Lower Moose Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:We walked this Loop at the end of March and found connecting trails that need blazing (Yellow/Yellow Cross and Yellow Diamond) and an unauthorized trail needs to be permanently closed\, There’s a large (about 20ft) and several smaller muddy section of the Yellow Square that needs corduroy. And a short reroute of the Yellow Circle to eliminate a very steep and eroded section of trail. Paul will bring the blaze materials and nails as well as a chainsaw. We’ll need at least one more saw and hand tools (axe or splitting maul) to fashion corduroy from deadfalls in the area. If you’d like to help\, dress for early spring weather and have decent boots. Plan to meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. Use street parking on Landon’s Way if it’s too crowded. [est. 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Loop 13 Trail Work - Westwoods: Upper Moose Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:We walked this Loop last month and found a couple of bridges that need elevation\, graffiti in the Colonial Caves that needs overpainting\, muddy sections of several trails that need corduroy\, and several unauthorized trails that need to be permanently closed. We also plan to reroute a long section of the Green Rectangle Trail away from the edge of the Great Harbor Brook wetlands\, and need to investigate\, flag\, and (if time permits) create/blaze a new route. As some of the unauthorized trails we plan to close are likely kept open by bikers\, we encourage riders to join us. Paul will be sure we have blaze materials and nails as well as the paint for oversraying the graffiti. We’ll need one or two chainsaws and hand tools (a pick or madock\, splitting maul\, etc.) for the bridge and corduroy work. Surveyor’s tape\, hand tools (loppers\, clippers\, etc.) and a rake will be needed to clear and relocate the trail. We’ll meet at the Upper Moose Hill entrance to Westwoods at 10AM. Parking is limited\, so if you can’t find parking at the trail head\, head down on Lower Road and walk up the road or through the connecting trail. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event.
