SUMMARY:Deck Salvage And Recycling - Clinton Cedar Island Marina
DESCRIPTION:The folks at the Cedar Island Marina are replacing an existing deck and the Trails Committee has been offered the salvaged material for use on the trails. With some care and creative cutting\, we expect to get 5 or 6 sections that can be used to cross wet sections of trail\, or perhaps as bridges. Today we’ll be joining the Clinton Marine Association (CMA) members to disassemble the deck into sections and get these transported to our Spencer’s Creek storage area. We’ll need as much help as we can muster to get this done\, so if you have the morning free\, please come and help! If you have: a Sawzall/Skill Saws & extension cord (120V power is available)\, a chain saw\, hammer\, pry bar\, ratchet straps\, impact driver (with bits)\, please bring them\, and be sure to bring work gloves\, sturdy shoes and eye/ear protection. We’ll be meeting at the CMA Building – Cedar Island Marina\, 34 Riverside Drive\, in Clinton. The building is about 1/4 mile inside the main entrance\, past the swimming pool\, on the right side of the road. opens the drop arm. But please contact either Paul Proulx or Kevin Mabon if you’re coming. We’d like to have a head-count and arrange for car pooling too. [est 3 to 5 hours] \nClick here to open a map to Cedar Island Marina

SUMMARY:Loop 6 (Nature Trail) Work - Westwoods at Dunk Rock Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:You likely see a pattern developing in the work party schedule! Our inspection of Loop 6 on the 17th of May uncovered a number of issues we plan to address on the last two work parties of this trail year. Here’s the grand list of all the projects that need doing: (1) Bridge 18 repair – needs several planks. (2) Bridge 19 Raise onto new sleepers. (3) Wet area – add stepping stone or two. (4) Remove old bridge and replace with stones. (5) Blaze side trail. Leave Marsh Road open for bikes. (6) Wet area. Cover with 4 dock sections. (7) Wet area – Trench across trail. (8) Add stepping stones across Marsh Road. (9) Blaze and route side trail from Marsh Road. Leave road open for bikes. (10) Bridge 20 – Improve bridge abutment with local rocks. (11) Wet area – Move trail to west side add drainage into marsh. (12 & 13) Wet areas (2) – move trail to east. (14) Wet area – Reroute trail around vernal pool. As with the prior workparty\, there’s much to do and we ask you come prepared with the tools of your particular trade. For the trail relocation (which is most of the work)\, we’ll need a couple of chainsaws\, and a lopper or two. Bridge lifting requires a maddock\, pry-bars and sleeper materials. Paul will have one saw\, and arrange for some of the heavier tools to be available. He’ll also bring the blaze materials and nails. Dress for early spring conditions\, and expect it to be a bit muddy. Plan to meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. SUMMARY:Loop 5 Trail Work - Westwoods at Greenwood Lane Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Our inspection of Loop 5 on the 5th of April uncovered a number of issues we plan to address on this work party. Today\, we’ll be addressing problems on the southern end of this loop (south of the Blue Rectangle Trail): (1) Close connecting trail – block both ends with branches. (2 & 3) Wet areas (2) — needs corduroy or bridging. (4) Blaze unmarked trail as Blue/Yellow Cross. (5) Bridge 06 & 07 need sleepers at both ends. (6) Close wet area with branches. Blaze existing by-pass. (7) Clear/Cleanup trail intersection of trees. Add more blazes. (8) Clear by-pass of leaners and improve blazing. Improve blocking of wet sections of Green Trail. Add trail closed signs. There’s much to do and we ask you come prepared with the tools of your particular trade. Dress for late spring conditions\, but expect it to be a bit muddy. Plan to meet at the Greenwood Lane cul-de-sac at 10AM. [est 2 – 3 hours]

SUMMARY:Loop 6 Evaluation at Westwoods: Dunk Rock Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Part of a survey walk planned to critically review all aspects of trail condition and location throughout Westwoods\, to capture other property information (like invasive plant sitings\, graffiti\, etc.) and unauthorized use of the property. To record this information in the field\, we plan to use the Avenza Map app\, which is available on both the Apple and Android handhelds or tablets paired with Loop 6 trail map. For the next two months\, this map is available as a free download from the Avenza Store … just search on ‘Westwoods Loop 6’ and you should find it (it’s not there just now\, but it will surely be available the first full week of May) If you’d like to add your expertise to our land review\, download the free version of the Avenza app from the Apple or Android store\, load the map\, put on some nice comfortable walking shoes and join our walk in the woods. Plan to meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Installing Plastic Sheeting for Occultation at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:The plastic we put down last spring appears to have done a good job in pushing back on the mugwort. So today we will be shifting these sheets (or what can be salvaged from them) to a nearby location to continue this work\, and seeding the uncovered area with native grass seed. We invite you to come and help us lay and secure the plastic sheets … it’s a multi person job\, especially if there’s a little wind\, and many bricks and wood timbers need to be placed to secure the sheeting. Good gloves and work boots are all that you’ll need to bring. Please meet us at the property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern. If there’s not enough room to pull off the road\, you can park up the road at the Cox School. SUMMARY:Loop 1 and 2 Stone and Bridge Work at Westwoods Sam Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:On the advice of WWTC member Ellsworth Mathias\, it was decided to rebuild the original stream crossing rather than construct a new bridge. So today\, using nearby rocks\, we expect to place stepping stones through a muddy section of the trail\, then raise and add support to the current wooden bridge to keep it from being covered/move in high water levels. We’ll bring a wheelbarrow\, a stone boat\, and a selection of long and short pry-bars\, and some pressure treated materials for adding bridge support. If you’d like to help\, bring along whatever tools you think could be useful. We’ll decide at the trailhead what we’ll haul to the worksite. Please meet us at the Sam Hill Entrance to Westwoods. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Loop 4 Trail Work at Westwoods Three Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:The second of Loop 4 work parties. Today we plan to reroute a heavily eroded section of the White Circle trail\, which we expect to flag on the earlier workparty. We plan to add two switchback sections that direct our trail users across more gradual terrain\, and then block the former trail from future use. We’ll need one or two chainsaws and a loppers\, two medium length bars in case we need to shift rocks\, and a maddock or trenching tool. Paul will have one saw\, and the blaze materials and nails. Dress for early spring conditions\, and expect it to be a bit muddy. Plan to meet at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods. When you park\, be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. SUMMARY:Loop 5 Evaluation at Westwoods Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:Part of a survey walk planned to critically review all aspects of trail condition and location throughout Westwoods\, to capture other property information (like invasive plant sitings\, graffiti\, etc.) and unauthorized use of the property. To record this information in the field\, we plan to use the Avenza Map app\, which is available on both the Apple and Android handhelds or tablets paired with Loop 5 trail map. For the next two months\, this map is available as a free download from the Avenza Store\, just search on ‘Westwoods Loop 5’ and you should find it (it’s not there just now\, but it will surely be available the first week of April) If you’d like to add your expertise to our land review\, download the free version of the Avenza app from the Apple or Android store\, load the map\, put on some nice comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket\, and join our walk in the woods. Plan to meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Removal at Westwoods Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:This will be our first organized invasives work party of the year and we will be learning from it as we go\, but it would great to have WWTC volunteers to help in this effort. GLCT director Jim Ballentine and Westwoods Property Steward Karen Klugman plan to cut\, treat with herbicide and pull (primarily) Multiflora Rose seedlings along the blue circle trail near where it crosses the red rectangle trail. If you’d like to help\, please bring heavy thorn-proof gloves\, waterproof wading boots and clippers or loppers. We will provide and oversee the application of herbicide. Meet at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. SUMMARY:Trail Clearing and Blazing - Big Maple Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Reports of poor blazing direct our work party to Big Maple this week. We’ve not been there for some time and expect that trail clearing will be needed too. So\, beyond the hammer\, nails and blazes\, this will be a mix of chainsaw and hand work\, so bring what equipment you’re comfortable using. If you’d like to help blaze\, you should bring along a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes. We’ll have both the blaze materials as well as nails. For trail clearing\, Paul will bring the chainsaw\, but bringing your own loppers or hand cutters will be useful. As the trail is fairly wet in places\, we also recommend decent waterproof boots\, along with the usual heavy gloves. If you’d like to help\, we’re meeting on Granite Road\, just across from the Granite Lake subdivision (just beyond Walden III) and parking on the generous shoulder along the road. Look for the long line of mailboxes and you’ll find us. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Loop 4 Trail Work at Westwoods Three Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:Our inspection of Loop 4 on the 15th uncovered a number of issues we plan to address on two of this month’s work parties. Today\, we’ll be (1) reestablishing four sections of trails (mostly places where the original trail wasn’t well marked and hikers have created multiple paths) and (2) relocating a wet section to a dryer ground nearby. We’ll also (3) Blaze three side-trails (two with White Square blazes\, and the third as a White/Blue cross trail)\, (4) clear a short section of ’stepping stone’ trail that’s obstructed and (5) move a ‘Trail Closed’ sign to a more visible spot. If time permits\, we’ll (6) flag a heavily eroded section of the White Circle for relocation on our follow-up workparty. So there’s much to do and we ask you come prepared with the tools of your particular trade. For the trail relocation (which is most of the work)\, we’ll need a couple of chainsaws\, and a lopper or two. Paul will have one saw\, and the post hammer we’ll need for moving the sign. He’ll also bring the blaze materials and nails. Dress for early spring conditions\, and expect it to be a bit muddy. Plan to meet at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods. When you park\, be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. SUMMARY:Loop 3 Trail Work at Westwoods 3 Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:The second of Loop 3 work parties. Today we plan to pull two 12 ft bridges out of the dirt and mud they’re sunk into\, and place them on cedar or locust sleepers. We also plan to haul in a third 12ft bridge\, which will span another wet area that’s formed immediately to the south. We’ll have ironed out the details of this work at the work party on the 1st\, and arranged to have the third bridge delivered to the trailhead. But we’ll need many hands to haul it about 1/8 of a mile to the site\, along with the sleeper materials. Like last week\, it’s a lot of work we’re expecting to accomplish. Bring any heavy tools you think would be useful and (again) meet at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods. If there isn’t room at the cul-de-sac\, please park down the road. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Loop 3 Trail Work at Westwoods 3 Corners Road
DESCRIPTION:Our inspection of Loop 3 on the 15th uncovered a number of issues we plan to address on the first two work parties of this month. Today\, we’ll be (1) relocating three sections of trails (two on hiker created by-passes\, and a third where we’ll clear a dryer path nearby)\, (2) Try to drain a wet area on the Blue Rectangle trail by creating a clearing to the south\, (3) Overpaint some graffiti at the Indian Cave\, (4) Blaze two side-trails (one with Orange/Red blazes\, the other with a Orange Square)\, and (5) add some stepping stones to cross a short wet section of the Orange Circle trail. We’ll also explore extracting two 12ft bridges that have sunk into the dirt\, in preparation for our work next week. So there’s much to do and we ask you come prepared with the tools of your particular trade. For trail relocation\, we’ll need a couple of chainsaws\, and a lopper or two. Paul will have one saw\, and he’ll bring the signs for closing trails\, and posts (and post hammer) we’ll need to mark off the closed sections. He’ll also bring the blaze materials and nails. For the trenching\, stone work and excavating we’ll need heavy tools: pry-bars\, shovels\, a maddox or grub axe. Probably best to toss what you have in the car and we’ll decide what to bring in at the trailhead. In short\, there’s much to do and a wide range of work\, the more hands\, the more we’ll get done. Dress for mild winter conditions\, and expect it to be a bit muddy. Plan to meet at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods. When you park be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. SUMMARY:Green Rectangle Trail Relocation - Hoadley Creek Granite Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:At the turn of the year\, Wesley Beeman from the Branford Land Trust proposed rerouting the Green Rectangle trail just before it crosses the town line. The original woods road is wet and deeply eroded and hikers have long charted their own paths around this section. As proposed\, our work today will open a path to the south that will be easier to traverse and less inclined to erosion. The relocation has been flagged with survey tape\, so on this workparty we’ll be clearing a few deadfalls from the path\, limbing trees where necessary and posting blazes. We’ll then remove old blazing from the original trail and post our ‘Trail Closed’ signs at either end. Paul will have his chainsaw for the big stuff\, but please bring along garden clippers\, loppers and/or a hand saw to help with clearing. Please dress for winter conditions\, a good set of work gloves and decent boots and meet us at the Granite Road trailhead\, parking in the little lot off to the right side of the Solstice (formerly the Gables) residents parking. This is at the very end of Granite Rd.\, off of Moose Hill Rd. [est 1-1/2 to 2 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. SUMMARY:Loop 3 Evaluation - Westwoods Three Corners Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Part of a survey walk planned to critically review all aspects of trail condition and location throughout Westwoods\, to capture other property information (like invasive plant sitings\, graffiti\, etc.) and unauthorized use of the property. To record this information in the field\, we plan to use the Avenza Map app\, which is available on both the Apple and Android handhelds or tablets paired with Loop 3 trail map. For the next month\, this map is available as a free download from the Avenza Store … just search on ‘Westwoods Loop 3’ and you should find it. If you’d like to add your expertise to our land review\, download the free version of the Avenza app from the Apple or Android store\, load the map\, put on some nice comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket\, and join our walk in the woods. Plan to meet us at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods … when you park be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.
