SUMMARY:Walk n Work Hike - Lower Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Our first ‘walk ’n work party’\, and another nice walk with a little light maintenance to help keep up our beautiful properties. On this outing we’ll be putting up our new (and quite beautiful) pink plastic blazes over the worn paint on ‘The Good Sister’s’ Trail. It’s a great opportunity for young kids to help us find all these ancient paint dots and for everyone else to practice their skills with a hammer. As with all our walk’n work parties\, this will all be work with hand tools … no chainsaws or heavy equipment are allowed. You’re welcome to join us for just the walk\, but if you want to help blaze\, a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes is recommended. Please meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Tree Work and Graffiti Removal at Lost Lake
DESCRIPTION:Reports of fallen trees and new graffiti inspired this first work party of the 2022-3 trail year. This will be a mix of chainsaw work and the artful application of camouflage paint to painted rocks\, so extra help and advice is very welcomed. For our sawyers\, heavy gloves and a set of loppers will come in handy for those without saws\, but if you have a saw\, please bring it along. But if you’d rather paint\, all you need is artistic license. As always\, if you need protective gear\, we have it\, but please notify Paul ahead of time to be sure it is in his car. Please meet us at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods … when you park be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Tanner Marsh Brook - Autumn Olive Removal and Field Restoration part 2
DESCRIPTION:Property Steward Kathy Azuara and her family are spearheading this effort to reclaim the small field at Tanner Marsh Brook. They’ve spent significant time over this summer to gain a beachhead into overgrowth and are now ready for a big push to clear as large an area as possible. We’ll need volunteers to handle chainsaws and loppers\, as well as help drag these cuttings to the side of the field. We also need people who can treat the cut stumps with herbicide to prevent further growth. As Kathy explains in the attached flyer\, even an hour of work will make a difference\, so please join us if you can. Plan to meet at the bend in Tanner Marsh Road\, just south of Richies Way (you’ll see the diamond shaped GLCT signs on trees along the east side of the road). Bring along loppers and other hand tools that could be useful to cut down heavy brush. We’ll have two chainsaws\, but you can bring one if you know how to use it safely. We’ll also have the necessary equipment for safely applying herbicide. [est 2-1/2 to 4 hours]

SUMMARY:Plankwalk Maintenance and Invasive Rose Removal
DESCRIPTION:Our May work party didn’t get this job completed so we’re continuing that effort\, now concentrating on the southern end of the plank walk. Identified are several sections where piling are sinking\, so we expect to be lifting planks and adding support to the pilings. if we have enough people\, we also hope to start pulling invasive rose plants from the sides of the walk … an infestation recently found\, and we’d like to remove this unwanted growth before it ‘jumps the great swamp’ and establishes itself in the heart of Westwoods. We’ll have the basic tools and materials for rebuilding sections of the plank walk\, but extra hammers and prybars will be useful\, so please bring them along. If you’d like to help with the rose (which we’re trying to pull out rather than cut)\, please thick gloves and a good pair of boots to keep your feet dry. Please meet us at the Peddlers Road trail entrance @ 10AM. [est 2-1/2 – 3 hours]

SUMMARY:East River Preserve - Beech Leaf Disease - Field Identification and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bob Marra of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, will be leading a field trip to educate us about this disease. Recently found in Connecticut\, not a lot is know about this organism and the disease that it causes … including knowledge as to how it spreads\, where it currently is in Connecticut and how it might be treated. Dr. Marra has identified an area of infestation that’s fairly close to the trailhead\, and we’ll learn to identify symptoms\, and how to best respond when we encounter other occurrences of the disease. Parking is limited at this trail entrance\, so please car pool\, and consider parking at Duck Hole Road (just north of the trail entrance) and walking down to the trail head. SUMMARY:Westwoods Plankwalk Maintenance at Peddlers Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Our April ‘walk ’n work party’ identified several areas of the boardwalk that need attention\, and we’re planning to do that work today. Also\, if we have good attendance\, we’d also like to have a crew remove several infestations of multi-flora rose recently reported in the wetlands. If you’d like to help us with either of these tasks\, please join us at the work party. SUMMARY:Walk ’n Work Hike - Kampmeyer: Laurel Hollow Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Our seventh ‘walk ’n work party’\, and another chance to mix of hiking and caring for our trials. This month we’ll take a walk around Kampmeyer South\, crossing the old Trolley bed and Swamp Board-walk\, and looping around high-lands to the west. We expect to be cutting vines and overhanging branches\, and getting the trails into good shape for the coming summer\, with plenty of time to view the last of the woodland flowers before they’re shaded out by the coming canopy. We’ll just be working with hand tools … no chainsaws or heavy equipment are allowed on these work parties. So just wear comfortable shoes and bring along your favorite gardening tools. Loppers and clippers are both useful\, so both are recommended … but if you have some special garden equipment\, bring it along and try it out. Please meet us at the Laurel Hollow cul-de-sac entrance @ 10AM\, just off West Lake Avenue. [est 2 – 2 -1/2 hours]

SUMMARY:Trail Marking Closing and Opening - Westwoods Sam Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, unauthorized trails have become established throughout Westwoods. There are many different reasons why this happens\, but it’s confusing for hikers and bikers\, against Land Trust Policy\, and also bad for the environment. This will be the first of many work parties that will begin to address this problem by (1) better marking the trails we want to keep\, (2) closing and obscuring the trails we want to close and (3) educating our many users as to why this is very important. Many hands will be appreciated … closing trails is most successful if we can block its path completely. Gloves\, good boots and a strong back are what we need you to bring. Please meet us at the Sam Hill Entrance to Westwoods. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

DESCRIPTION:Our six ‘walk ’n work party’\, and another chance to mix hiking and caring for our trials. SUMMARY:Hoadley Creek Bridge Repair
DESCRIPTION:This past weekend\, we received a report that the 18ft bridge that crosses Hoadley Creek has been damaged and needs to be reset on it’s piers … with a center support needing to be reset in the creek bed.  It’s a very heavy bridge\, and we’ll need plenty of help in shifting the bridge and restoring the foundations.  We’ll have sledge hammers and prybars\, as well as a chainsaw for removal of the offending tree\, but ask you to bring along any heavy equipment you may have to supplement our tools.  Join us at the end of Old Road\, at the traffic circle before Balaurel Drive.  We’ll plan there our best access to the bridge location.  If you’re late\, give Paul a call (203) 687-7756 and he’ll direct you from his mobile. SUMMARY:Clearing for Endangered Plants - Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:This is a continuation of our efforts in the autumn (and last month)\, where we cleared trees and woody plants from the former Eversource right-of-way: an effort to protect several plants ‘of special concern’ now that the utility is no longer maintaining the clearing from reverting to forest. This work party will prune these back as the power company formerly did\, and work to maintain the threatened plants as a part of the Westwoods ecosystem. This is a mix of chainsaw\, lopper and hand-saw work\, so bring your favorite tools if you’d like to come along and help. Plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field. We’ll head to the Blue Circle Power line crossing from there. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event.
