SUMMARY:Trail Building and Blazing and Photoshoot - Westwoods Sam Hill Rd.
DESCRIPTION:This is another of our ‘Build a Better WW Trails’ series. On this work party\, we plan to work on sections of the White/Orange cross trail just north of the relocation work we performed in late November. We’ll be removing a tree and re-routing the trail to make this disused cross trail easier to use\, especially in wet weather. And if time permits\, we plan to take a series of photos which we’ll use in a future public meeting to introduce our rebuilding program to our biking and hiking public. This will be chainsaw work\, blazing work\, and perhaps some pry-bar work\, as we may need to shift some stones. If you’re interested in helping\, bring along the tools you’re comfortable using and meet us at the Sam Hill Entrance to Westwoods. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Removal at County Road Meadows
DESCRIPTION:The Fenner Field is a small (4 acre) field that was donated to the Land Trust in the early ’90’s. and managed as a hay-field ever since. As often happens with such management\, invasive plants (like multiflora rose and autumn olive) establish themselves along the field edges and degrade the quality of the hay from that region of the field. The farmer then stops mowing the area\, and the field perimeter is then lost to these unwelcome plants. After thirty years\, the Land Trust has ‘pushed back’ and begun recovering the field edge with heavy equipment. This work party will continue where this equipment left off: trimming the battered trunks and clearing plants back to the fence lines where the machines couldn’t reach. This will be both chainsaw and hand tool work\, along with hauling and piling brush and application of herbicide to the freshly cut stumps … so there’s lots of work for a wide range of volunteers. And the more people we have\, the more we’ll accomplish. Dress warmly\, and bring the tools you plan to use. The field entrance is very close to where (very short) Church Road intersects with County Road … this is just east of the Long Hill/County Road intersection. Parking is along Church Road and be mindful not to block traffic along this town road. [est 3 – 4 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. SUMMARY:Tricky Tree Work at Lower Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:We received a report in December of an unhealthy tree overhanging the Lower Moose Hill Road parking area\, and we’re meeting early to drop and remove this before the lot fills with Saturday hiking/biking traffic. As we’re in the area\, we then expect to head over to Landon’s Way\, where a couple of large\, but very dead Ash trees need to be dropped in a controlled manner. As we’ll need to clear much of the wood from either the parking area or a driveway\, we have a need for sawyers and people who will roll logs and shift branches into the nearby woods. And anyone who would like to take this wood home for their stove or fireplace\, is welcome to do so. Paul will have a chainsaw and other necessary equipment\, but you should dress warmly and bring equipment you’re comfortable using. Note the early time\, and meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. SUMMARY:Walk n Work Hike at Lower Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Our first ‘walk ’n work party’ of the year\, and a great way to begin the New Year both helping WWTC and enjoying a nice walk in the woods. Like all our W n’W outings this trail season\, we’ll be posting our new plastic blazes\, now continuing on Yellow (Circle and Square) trails. It’s a great opportunity for young kids to help us find all the existing and faded blazes and for everyone else to practice their skills with a hammer. As with all our walk’n work parties\, this will all be work with hand tools … no chainsaws or heavy equipment are allowed. You’re welcome to join us for just the walk\, but if you want to help blaze\, a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes is recommended. Please meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Trail Clearing at Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:For all who are interested in some bracing work before their New Year celebration\, we’ve planned this final work party of the year. We’re not exactly sure of where we’ll be heading\, but the plan is to meet at the Dunk Rock Road trailhead\, and plan from there. Paul will have a chainsaw and other necessary equipment. But you should dress warm and bring equipment you’re comfortable using. If you need safety equipment (chaps\, helmet\, etc.) let Paul know in advance so he can put them into his car. Plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field. [est 2 to 2-1/2 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Moving Bridges - Kampmeyer North
DESCRIPTION:Back in 2014 the WWTC installed two 12ft bridges on the White Rectangle Trail\, crossing a large wetland area. We’ve re-routed this trail to avoid these wetlands completely and now plan to use these structures to replace two which are in poor condition and fall short of the WWTC’s standards for bridge construction and placement. We need at least six strong volunteers to muscle these out of the woods (about 225ft) and then we’ll drive them to the Trail Head at the Chestnut Grove cul-de-sac\, where we’ll walk them in to the new bridge site (about 150ft). Once there\, we’ll need to move rocks to make substantial abutments to support the bridges at least 4 inches from the water surface. If you’d like to help\, warm clothes\, gloves and boots are really all that’s needed. If you have some rock moving bars or picks\, please bring them along too. We’ll have the vehicle and the baseball bats well need to support the bridges while being walked along the trails. We’ll meet at the Chestnut Grove cul-de-sac\, where there’s plenty of parking\, and walk to the bridge site from there. SUMMARY:Clearing for Endangered Plants - Westwoods Red Triangle on Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:With Eversource abandoning their distribution lines through Westwoods\, several plants ‘of special concern’ and now established in the former right-of-way\, are threatened as the trees and woody plants take back the clearing. This work party is part of continuing effort to prune these back as the power company formerly did\, and work to maintain the threatened plants as a part of the Westwoods ecosystem. This is all lopper and hand-saw work\, so bring your favorite garden tools if you’d like to come along and help. Plan to meet at the Red Triangle Trail entrance\, off Moose Hill Road. This is about 1/2 way between the two Moose Hill Road trail entrances … look for a large green gate on the eastern side of the road. The gate will be open\, with plenty of parking just beyond the gate. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Plank Walk Invasive Rose Removal at Peddlers Road
DESCRIPTION:Our plank walk maintenance last spring identified a significant infestation of invasive multiflora rose along the walk\, but we didn’t have the time to completely remove these plants. On this work party we plan to continue that effort\, hoping to push the infestation further north and away from the heart of Westwoods. If you’d like to help\, please wear thick gloves and a good pair of boots to keep your feet dry. And bring along hand clippers\, loppers\, and a good sense of humor. SUMMARY:Removal of PVC Tubing at Little West Pond
DESCRIPTION:Last spring our Little West Pond property stewards discovered hundreds of feet of black pvc tubing had been dumped in the woods of our Little West Pond property. Although not an environmental hazard\, dumping of anything on GLCT property is not allowed\, and we plan to pull this out and transport it to the town transfer station. It’s light work\, and will be even easier if we get a good turn-out. So if you’d like to assist us\, bring good work gloves\, and perhaps a set of tin-snips to cut the tubing into more easily managed lengths. Please meet us at the Gina Lane trail entrance\, about 500 feet from the intersection of West Lake Ave. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Walk n Work Hike - Lower Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Our first ‘walk ’n work party’\, and another nice walk with a little light maintenance to help keep up our beautiful properties. On this outing we’ll be putting up our new (and quite beautiful) pink plastic blazes over the worn paint on ‘The Good Sister’s’ Trail. It’s a great opportunity for young kids to help us find all these ancient paint dots and for everyone else to practice their skills with a hammer. SUMMARY:Tree Work and Graffiti Removal at Lost Lake
DESCRIPTION:Reports of fallen trees and new graffiti inspired this first work party of the 2022-3 trail year. This will be a mix of chainsaw work and the artful application of camouflage paint to painted rocks\, so extra help and advice is very welcomed. For our sawyers\, heavy gloves and a set of loppers will come in handy for those without saws\, but if you have a saw\, please bring it along. But if you’d rather paint\, all you need is artistic license. As always\, if you need protective gear\, we have it\, but please notify Paul ahead of time to be sure it is in his car. Please meet us at the Three Corners Road Entrance to Westwoods … when you park be careful not to obstruct any of the driveways. SUMMARY:Tanner Marsh Brook - Autumn Olive Removal and Field Restoration part 2
DESCRIPTION:Property Steward Kathy Azuara and her family are spearheading this effort to reclaim the small field at Tanner Marsh Brook. They’ve spent significant time over this summer to gain a beachhead into overgrowth and are now ready for a big push to clear as large an area as possible. We’ll need volunteers to handle chainsaws and loppers\, as well as help drag these cuttings to the side of the field. We also need people who can treat the cut stumps with herbicide to prevent further growth. As Kathy explains in the attached flyer\, even an hour of work will make a difference\, so please join us if you can. Plan to meet at the bend in Tanner Marsh Road\, just south of Richies Way (you’ll see the diamond shaped GLCT signs on trees along the east side of the road). Bring along loppers and other hand tools that could be useful to cut down heavy brush. We’ll have two chainsaws\, but you can bring one if you know how to use it safely. We’ll also have the necessary equipment for safely applying herbicide. [est 2-1/2 to 4 hours]
