SUMMARY:Trail Flagging - Westwoods at Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:This work party is delayed until the afternoon so people can first attend the Forest Ecology Tour\, which starts at 9AM (See below). But once done\, we’ll be heading over to the Red Rectangle Trail just south of the Eversource right-of-way to explore alternative routes to the extremely steep section of trail just after the wetland crossing. We plan to bushwhack north and south of the current trail location in the expectation of identifying a more gradual route for this challenging trail. Good footwear and a decent sense of direction is all you need to bring. We’ll bring the survey tape. If you’d like to explore with us\, plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field. [est 2 – 2-1/2 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Forest Ecology Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please join GLCT president Spencer Meyer and CT DEEP state forester Alex Amendola for a late-season tour of some of the less common ecological features in Westwoods. We’ll look at pitch pine\, scrub oak\, and other imperiled/rare plant communities\, as well as winter plant and tree identification and other ecology. Expect 3-4 miles of hiking\, and perhaps a little off-trail hiking\, depending on the curiosity level of the group. Meet at the Dunk Rock Road trailhead. \nPlease meet 10 minutes ahead of the hike start time. Leashed dogs may attend hikes unless otherwise stated in the descriptions above. Heavy rain cancels.

SUMMARY:Trail Blazing at Spencers Creek
DESCRIPTION:A new cross trail and re-routing of two sections of the Red Rectangle Trail are on the work list today. Our property steward Gina Keifer will have flagged the new locations in advance\, so all we’ll need to do is post blazing and trim a few branches\, as necessary. If time and energy permit\, we may remove the decaying bench in preparation for a stone replacement. If you’d like to help blaze\, a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes is recommended. Please meet at property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern. If there’s not enough room to pull off the road\, you can park up the road at the Cox School. [est 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. DESCRIPTION:We were washed out of both of our September work parties\, so this and next week’s work is a replay of trying to finish up the Red Rectangle and Square Trails. SUMMARY:Kiosk Move and Cleanup at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:As part of our effort to make the Spencer’s Creek Trails more accessible\, we’re changing the trail entrance to just north of the field. The tree canopy in this area will help keep the entrance clear\, and not overgrown with poison ivy. As part of this shift\, we’re moving the kiosk to this area\, and making the new location more presentable to our hikers. We have much work to do today\, and hope that many come out to help. We’ll need to have people working our post-hole digger\, people cleaning out a large pile of branches and old wood scraps\, and others figuring out how to lift the existing kiosk out of the ground. So please bring along garden rakes and shovels\, and perhaps a pry-bar or two. And of course\, a good set of work gloves and heavy boots. If you’d like to help us\, please meet at the property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern. If there’s not enough room to pull off the road\, you can park up the road at the Cox School. SUMMARY:Tree Work at Cindy Lane
DESCRIPTION:Nut Plains property steward Doug Clark has reported three trees that need to be removed from the trails. One is reported to be a beech\, so we’re curious if this is the beginning of a huge collection of this tree species succumbing to Beech Leaf disease. Please join us if you have the afternoon free. We’ll have a saw and protective gear\, but bring along a pair of heavy gloves and any hand tools you feel comfortable using. Please meet us at the Cindy Lane entrance to Nut Plains Preserve\, just across from the pond. SUMMARY:Audubon Bird Program at Guilford Free Library
DESCRIPTION:Fall migration brings numerous species back to and passing through Connecticut\, in addition to our year-round residents. With so many birds flying about\, it can be difficult to determine which species you are looking at\, especially in non-breeding and juvenile plumages. But with the right tips\, it gets much easier. In this presentation\, CT Audubon Society’s Conservation and Education Coordinator\, Joe Attwater will discuss tips on identifying species coming through this time of year.
