SUMMARY:Trail Clearing and Blazing - Westwoods at Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:Any clearing work we didn’t complete on the 30th will be completed first\, then we’ll go through and install the Red Rectangle blazes. Paul will have a chainsaw if it’s needed\, but hand tools such as loppers of a hand saw will be useful\, as will a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes. Dress for the conditions\, whatever they may be. Plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field @ 10AM. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact Rob Valley stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Making Plastic Cross-Trail Blazes
DESCRIPTION:We can’t find a commercial source for special cross-trail blazes\, so today we’ll be getting together to fabricate those needed in Westwoods. We’ll have all the materials we need\, as well as a paper cutter and glue to generate the needed multicolored cross-trail blazes. We’ve not yet figured out the best place to do the work\, so if you’re interested in joining us\, please give Paul a call < 203.687.7756> a few days before the 6th and he’ll give you directions. [est 2 to 3 hours depending on how many people show up] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact Rob Valley stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Trail Flagging - Westwoods at Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:The Red Rectangle Trail just south of the Eversource right-of-way has an extremely steep section of trail just after the wetland crossing\, which we’d like to improve\, and plan to bushwhack north and south of the current trail location in the expectation of identifying a more gradual route for this challenging trail. Given we find a good alternate path\, we plan to flag it completely\, and possibly begin the process of re-routing the trail. Good footwear and a decent sense of direction is all you need to bring. We’ll bring the survey tape. If you’d like to explore with us\, plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field. SUMMARY:Trail Blazing - Westwoods at Greenwood Lane
DESCRIPTION:The new blaze materials have arrived\, and on the ‘eve of Christmas eve’ work party we expect to change over this cross trail to the new White Rectangle designation\, and post ‘Trail Closed\, signs on the section of cross trail we’re now abandoning. If time and interest permit\, we’ll get a jump on next weekend’s work party exploring the re-routing of the Red Rectangle Trail. SUMMARY:Brushing and Moving Cedar Logs at Spencers Creek
DESCRIPTION:A work party in November cut down a number of red cedars on the Sunset Creek meadow. The branches were all trimmed from the trunks\, but many branches and all the trunks need to be removed from the field. This morning we’ll be hauling branches to a chipping pile near the street\, and transporting all the trunks over to our wood storage area at the Spencer’s Creek gate. Good gloves and work boots are all that you’ll need to bring. If you’d like to help\, please meet at the Sunset Creek Road cut-de-sac (the road is directly across from the Cox School entrance on Three Mile Course). Expect 3-4 miles of hiking\, and perhaps a little off-trail hiking\, depending on the curiosity level of the group. Meet at the Dunk Rock Road trailhead. \nPlease meet 10 minutes ahead of the hike start time. Leashed dogs may attend hikes unless otherwise stated in the descriptions above. Heavy rain cancels.

DESCRIPTION:A new cross trail and re-routing of two sections of the Red Rectangle Trail are on the work list today. Our property steward Gina Keifer will have flagged the new locations in advance\, so all we’ll need to do is post blazing and trim a few branches\, as necessary. SUMMARY:Trail Blazing at Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:We were washed out of both of our September work parties\, so this and next week’s work is a replay of trying to finish up the Red Rectangle and Square Trails. If you’d like to help blaze\, a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes is recommended. Plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Kiosk Move and Cleanup at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:As part of our effort to make the Spencer’s Creek Trails more accessible\, we’re changing the trail entrance to just north of the field. The tree canopy in this area will help keep the entrance clear\, and not overgrown with poison ivy. As part of this shift\, we’re moving the kiosk to this area\, and making the new location more presentable to our hikers. We have much work to do today\, and hope that many come out to help. We’ll need to have people working our post-hole digger\, people cleaning out a large pile of branches and old wood scraps\, and others figuring out how to lift the existing kiosk out of the ground. So please bring along garden rakes and shovels\, and perhaps a pry-bar or two. And of course\, a good set of work gloves and heavy boots. If you’d like to help us\, please meet at the property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern. If there’s not enough room to pull off the road\, you can park up the road at the Cox School. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Tree Work at Cindy Lane
DESCRIPTION:Nut Plains property steward Doug Clark has reported three trees that need to be removed from the trails. One is reported to be a beech\, so we’re curious if this is the beginning of a huge collection of this tree species succumbing to Beech Leaf disease. Please join us if you have the afternoon free. We’ll have a saw and protective gear\, but bring along a pair of heavy gloves and any hand tools you feel comfortable using. Please meet us at the Cindy Lane entrance to Nut Plains Preserve\, just across from the pond. SUMMARY:Audubon Bird Program at Guilford Free Library
DESCRIPTION:Fall migration brings numerous species back to and passing through Connecticut\, in addition to our year-round residents. With so many birds flying about\, it can be difficult to determine which species you are looking at\, especially in non-breeding and juvenile plumages. But with the right tips\, it gets much easier. In this presentation\, CT Audubon Society’s Conservation and Education Coordinator\, Joe Attwater will discuss tips on identifying species coming through this time of year. This talk will be held at the Guilford Library. Please register on the library events page.
