SUMMARY:Installing Plastic Cross-Trail Blazes at Lower Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:We’re getting down to the end and today we expect to finish up the cross trails\, completing the Green/Yellow. If you’d like to help blaze\, you should bring along a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes … we’ll have both the cut blaze materials as well as nails. Please dress for spring conditions and meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. The lot can get filled on Saturday mornings\, so please use street parking on Landon’s Way if it’s too crowded. [est 2 – 2-1/2 hours] \nNote: Cub Scout Troop 475 plans to be removing foreign invasive plants from the trailhead this morning. If additional help is needed\, we expect to provide assistance. Come with a set of garden clippers or loppers to help with this work. \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Westwoods Plankwalk Inspection and Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:We’ve received reports this past winter of rotted sections and boards that are in need of replacement. Indeed\, Trail Angel’s have used some of the WWTC stockpile to patch over some of the more degraded sections. So our work today is to inspect the entire walk and repair where we can. If we find places that need additional time or materials\, we’ll plan these for another day. We’ll have the basic tools and materials for rebuilding sections of the plank walk\, but extra hammers and prybars will be useful\, so please bring them along. Please meet us at the Peddlers Road trail entrance @ 2PM. [est 2 – 2-1/2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Installing Plastic Trail Blazes and Trail Maintenance at Kampmeyer
DESCRIPTION:Property Steward Jeff Trombetta has asked for help in renewing the blazing on the property\, so we’ll be doing as much as we can this afternoon\, concentrating on the yellow trail south of the trolley strip. See the 2nd of March for details of what you should bring for blazing. We’ll be bringing a chain saw with us\, but a backup saw would be welcomed\, and extra hands to share the carrying are valuable too. As always\, there will be some cleanup work\, so if you’re not a sawyer\, bring along your loppers or tools you’re comfortable using. Dress warmly\, with gloves and comfortable shoes. Please meet us at the Laural Hollow cul-de-sac entrance @ 10AM\, just off West Lake Avenue. But even if you don’t consider yourself a sawyer\, please come along … there’s always a need for people to help move limbs and assist the sawyers. So bring along a pair of heavy gloves and any hand tools you feel comfortable using. Please meet us at the Broad Hill Circle cul-de-sac\, parking anywhere along the circle edge. SUMMARY:Installing Plastic Cross-Trail Blazes - Westwoods Sam Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Our assembly line crew fabricated all the WW cross-trail blazes at last weekend’s work party\, and today we’ll be installing them on their trails. We’ll be starting on the southern end of the trails and working north. Paul has all the plastic blazes and aluminum nails. If you’d like to be part of this event bring along your favorite hammer\, and a set of warm gloves. Meet at 10AM at the intersection of Sam Hill and Leete’s Island Roads. If the parking area is full\, you can park all along Sam Hill Road. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact Rob Valley stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Trail Flagging - Westwoods at Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:The Red Rectangle Trail just south of the Eversource right-of-way has an extremely steep section of trail just after the wetland crossing\, which we’d like to improve\, and plan to bushwhack north and south of the current trail location in the expectation of identifying a more gradual route for this challenging trail. Given we find a good alternate path\, we plan to flag it completely\, and possibly begin the process of re-routing the trail. Good footwear and a decent sense of direction is all you need to bring. We’ll bring the survey tape. If you’d like to explore with us\, plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field. SUMMARY:Brushing and Moving Cedar Logs at Spencers Creek
DESCRIPTION:A work party in November cut down a number of red cedars on the Sunset Creek meadow. The branches were all trimmed from the trunks\, but many branches and all the trunks need to be removed from the field. SUMMARY:Kiosk Move and Cleanup at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:As part of our effort to make the Spencer’s Creek Trails more accessible\, we’re changing the trail entrance to just north of the field. The tree canopy in this area will help keep the entrance clear\, and not overgrown with poison ivy. As part of this shift\, we’re moving the kiosk to this area\, and making the new location more presentable to our hikers. We have much work to do today\, and hope that many come out to help. We’ll need to have people working our post-hole digger\, people cleaning out a large pile of branches and old wood scraps\, and others figuring out how to lift the existing kiosk out of the ground. So please bring along garden rakes and shovels\, and perhaps a pry-bar or two. And of course\, a good set of work gloves and heavy boots. If you’d like to help us\, please meet at the property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern. SUMMARY:Tree Work at Cindy Lane
DESCRIPTION:Nut Plains property steward Doug Clark has reported three trees that need to be removed from the trails. One is reported to be a beech\, so we’re curious if this is the beginning of a huge collection of this tree species succumbing to Beech Leaf disease. Please join us if you have the afternoon free. We’ll have a saw and protective gear\, but bring along a pair of heavy gloves and any hand tools you feel comfortable using. Please meet us at the Cindy Lane entrance to Nut Plains Preserve\, just across from the pond. [est 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.
