SUMMARY:Trail Marking Closing and Opening - Westwoods Sam Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, unauthorized trails have become established throughout Westwoods. There are many different reasons why this happens\, but it’s confusing for hikers and bikers\, against Land Trust Policy\, and also bad for the environment. This will be the first of many work parties that will begin to address this problem by (1) better marking the trails we want to keep\, (2) closing and obscuring the trails we want to close and (3) educating our many users as to why this is very important. Many hands will be appreciated … closing trails is most successful if we can block its path completely. Gloves\, good boots and a strong back are what we need you to bring. Please meet us at the Sam Hill Entrance to Westwoods. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Guided Hike at East River Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join GLCT board member Janet Ainsworth (203-530-7826)\, GLCT board member Claudia Bartlett\, and Appalachian Mountain Club hike leader Mary Anne Hardy for this very interesting segment of the New England National Scenic Trail (NET). It runs between the East River Preserve at the Sullivan Drive trailhead and a parking pullout on Clapboard Hill Road. The route is mostly flat and features brooks\, glacial erratics\, the remains of an old mill and various views of the East River. The 583-acre preserve was purchased by the town in 2009\, the same year that the NET was designated as a national scenic trail. No dogs please.

SUMMARY:Walk 'n Work - Westwoods at Peddlers Road
DESCRIPTION:Our six ‘walk ’n work party’\, and another chance to mix hiking and caring for our trials. This month we’ll be crossing the 660ft plank walk across the Great Swamp to both trim branches and vines from the walk way and examine the planks for winter damage. Anything that’s found will be recorded so it can be repaired later\, and we’ll be free to continue our walk to the south before returning back to the trail head. We’ll just be working with hand tools … no chainsaws or heavy equipment are allowed on these work parties. Just wear warm and comfortable shoes and bring along your favorite gardening tools. Loppers and clippers are both useful\, so both are recommended … but if you have some special garden equipment\, bring it along and try it out. Please meet us at the Peddlers Road trail entrance @ 10AM. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Hoadley Creek Bridge Repair
DESCRIPTION:This past weekend\, we received a report that the 18ft bridge that crosses Hoadley Creek has been damaged and needs to be reset on it’s piers … with a center support needing to be reset in the creek bed.  It’s a very heavy bridge\, and we’ll need plenty of help in shifting the bridge and restoring the foundations.  We’ll have sledge hammers and prybars\, as well as a chainsaw for removal of the offending tree\, but ask you to bring along any heavy equipment you may have to supplement our tools.  Join us at the end of Old Road\, at the traffic circle before Balaurel Drive.  We’ll plan there our best access to the bridge location.  If you’re late\, give Paul a call (203) 687-7756 and he’ll direct you from his mobile. [est 2  – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Guided Hike at the Braemore Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join James Powers\, retired Guilford High School history teacher\, historian\, archeologist\, and author\, on a hike in the Braemore Preserve. Participants will be able to see a natural human profile that was important to the spirituality of the Quinnipiac Tribe. Powers\, also a founding member of the Dudley Farm Museum and the Quinnipiac Dawnland Museum\, will explain the importance of such natural features to indigenous spirituality. Roughly 30 minutes to a rocky ledge from which Bluff Head is easily viewed\, and return. GLCT board member Janet Ainsworth (203-530-7826) will co-lead and Mr. Powers will talk about his research immediately after the hike. This hike is suitable for school-aged children. SUMMARY:Clearing for Endangered Plants - Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:This is a continuation of our efforts in the autumn (and last month)\, where we cleared trees and woody plants from the former Eversource right-of-way: an effort to protect several plants ‘of special concern’ now that the utility is no longer maintaining the clearing from reverting to forest. This work party will prune these back as the power company formerly did\, and work to maintain the threatened plants as a part of the Westwoods ecosystem. This is a mix of chainsaw\, lopper and hand-saw work\, so bring your favorite tools if you’d like to come along and help. Plan to meet at the Dunk Rock Road entrance\, parking in the lot near the Bishop’s raspberry field. We’ll head to the Blue Circle Power line crossing from there. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event.
