SUMMARY:Plankwalk Maintenance - Peddlers Road
DESCRIPTION:We didn’t get a big turn-out for last month’s plank walk workparty\, so we’re hoping more people come out today so we can complete the repairs on two ‘soft’ sections of this venerable walkway. We expect to use the materials we’ve stockpiled on the northern end of the walk for this work\, so there won’t be anything (except tools) to haul down from the parking area. We’ll bring the basic tools for the work\, but extra hammers and prybars will be useful. Please meet us at the Peddlers Road trail entrance @ 10AM. [est 2 – 2-1/2 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Rebuilding Water Crossings - Sam Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Last month we successfully installed stepping stones on a water crossing\, and with what we’ve learned we plan to do similar work on ‘problem’ areas of the White Circle and Green Circle trails. We may again use stones for this\, but will be prepared to use available slabs of wood if that can be made to work. We will have a small collection of pry-bars and levers with us\, but please bring any tool you have which could be helpful\, along with good work gloves and strong boots. Paul will bring his chainsaw. Please meet us at the Sam Hill Entrance to Westwoods. SUMMARY:Native Plants in West Woods: Identification\, Value\, and Availability
DESCRIPTION:Landscape architect Crystal Gaudio will identify a variety of native trees\, shrubs and herbaceous plants common to Westwoods and available for purchase locally. She will discuss their identifying characteristics\, ecological value\, and optimal growing conditions. By focusing on native plants common to our area\, Gaudio hopes to enrich people’s experience while hiking in Westwoods as well as offer ideas for plants they may be able to grow on their properties. Native plantings are also essential to species that depend on them for food and shelter.

SUMMARY:Quarry Guided Hike
DESCRIPTION:Explore the west side of Westwoods with GLCT member Stacey Smith. This wonderful hike scampers up and through a boulder field follows a stream in a beautiful\, mossy canyon\, and then leads to views of the quarry in Branford. The boulder field adds an element of challenge and intrigue\, perfect for those who enjoy a bit of rock scrambling. While not a flat hike\, the varied terrain and rock scrambling opportunities make it an engaging experience for outdoor enthusiasts\, especially young ones. Meet in the little lot on the right side across from the Solstice Living Center parking lot. This is at the end of Granite Road\, off of Moose Hill Road. More than a drizzle cancels the hike. SUMMARY:Cutting/Clearing Trees and Spreading Woodchips - Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:This is a continuation of the work from last month on the Sunset Creek Meadow. First off\, we’ll be cutting up the trees Patrick Perdu dropped last month\, and hauling the wood and branches to the road. This will allow us to mow the fields later this year. If time permits\, we’ll also spread out two piles of wood chips to complete covering the area overrun with invasive mugwort. If you’d like to help with the trees\, please bring along a chainsaw. A shovel\, pitchfork and rake will be useful to spread the chips. if you have a good sized wheelbarrow or garden cart\, please bring it too … it will be very useful for both hauling wood to the curb or moving wood chips. Please meet us at the Sunset Creek Road cul-de-sac (the road is directly across from the Cox School entrance on Three Mile Course). There’s plenty of parking at the cul-de-sac\, and more along the road. SUMMARY:Planting Native Plants - East River/White Birch Drive
DESCRIPTION:Last autumn\, Eversource clear-cut their transmission right-of-way all across the town\, and the small property the Land Trust owns on the East River was completely cleared of tall vegetation. Eversource has provided us with low-growing native plants we can replant with\, and this work party will get these young plants into the ground. The plants are small: either plugs or 1 gallon containers\, but we have about 60 of them to get established. If you’d like to help us\, please bring a shovel and trowel\, along with work gloves and good boots\, and meet us at the southern end of White Birch Drive. We’ll be on the southern side of the stone bridge over the East River\, about 800ft from the intersection of White Birch and Nut Plains Road. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Installing Cardboard for Sheet Mulch at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:On this work party we will begin implementation of an alternative approach to mugwort management using cardboard and wood chips and “sheet mulch” two designated test areas. Like with the occultation at the Spencer’s Creek field\, this treatment should also kill or severely weaken the mugwort rhizomes\, but over the course of a couple of seasons. We’ll finish up any cardboard prep work we didn’t get done during the week\, and then spread the cardboard sheets over our flagged areas. This will set the stage for a dropping of wood chips sometime the following week. If you’d like to help\, please meet us at the Sunset Creek Road cut-de-sac (the road is directly across from the Cox School entrance on Three Mile Course). There’s plenty of parking at the cut-de-sac\, and more along the road. SUMMARY:Prepping Cardboard for Sheet Mulch at Spencer’s Creek
DESCRIPTION:On both these afternoons we’ll be preparing cardboard so it can be used to control the mugwort on the Sunset Creek Meadow. Because the cardboard is buried under wood chips\, we need to remove all the ‘add ons’ (mostly plastic tape and staples) so we don’t end up contaminating the soil. As we’re using 1000’s of square feet of cardboard\, we can use all the help we can get. It’s the perfect job for high school students looking for community service time opportunities. If you’d like to help\, please bring along a pair of gloves\, a pocket knife or box cutter\, and maybe a set of pliers. Meet us at the Sunset Creek Road cut-de-sac (the road is directly across from the Cox School entrance on Three Mile Course). There’s plenty of parking at the cut-de-sac\, and more along the road. [est 2 hours each day] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Installing Plastic Sheeting for Occultation at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:Today we will be laying down sheets of plastic in the meadow at Spencer Creek. This sheeting will remain in place for two or more months and is intended to suffocate and kill the mugwort rhizomes which have taken over the front portion of the field. We invite you to come and help us lay and secure the plastic sheets this Sunday. It’s a multi person job\, especially if there’s a little wind\, and many concrete blocks and wood timbers need to be placed to secure the sheeting. Good gloves and work boots are all that you’ll need to bring. Please meet us at the property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern. If there’s not enough room to pull off the road\, you can park up the road at the Cox School. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Moving and Installing a Granite Bench at Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:We’re replacing the 14 year old wooden bench at Spencer’s Creek with a more permanent one made from stone\, and today we’ll be moving it from the street to the river overlook (about 1200ft) and installing it in its final location. This is serious heavy lifting\, and we need as many strong arms as we can muster to move the 365 lb top and twin 125 lb legs to their final destination. That being said\, with many hands\, we expect the work to go quickly. So please come and help\, with good gloves and work boots are all that you’ll need to bring. Please meet us at the property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern. If there’s not enough room to pull off the road\, you can park up the road at the Cox School. SUMMARY:Trail and Bridge Removal and Trail Closing Work - Cindy Lane
DESCRIPTION:Nut Plains property steward Doug Clark has recommended closing the Red/White cross trail because it’s seldom used and difficult to maintain. So we plan to post our ‘Trail Closed’ signs at both ends of this short trail and block the path to both foot and bike traffic. We also plan to remove both 12ft bridges\, and bring them to the Cindy Lane entrance. This work will require at least six strong people\, so your participation will be most appreciated. Also\, if time permits\, we’d like to remove two ’step over’ trees that Doug has found on the White Trail near the Broad Hill entrance. Much to do! We’ll bring what’s needed to move the bridges (assuming a six person crew) along with a saw and protective gear\, but please bring along a pair of heavy gloves and strong boots. We’ll meet at the Cindy Lane entrance to Nut Plains Preserve\, just across from the pond. [est 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event.
