SUMMARY:The Extraordinary Caterpillar
DESCRIPTION:The Extraordinary Caterpillar is a 60-minute documentary that uncovers the vital role caterpillars play in sustaining the natural world. Through stunning visuals and engaging storytelling\, the film reveals how these small but mighty creatures support birds\, pollinators\, and the entire food web – while depending on native plants for their survival. \nFeaturing Doug Tallamy (Homegrown National Park) and Sam Jaffe (The Caterpillar Lab)\, the film highlights the powerful truth: although over 98% of life on Earth is smaller than a bee\, human-designed landscapes often overlook the systems that keep ecosystems healthy. \nFollow scientists and community advocates as they reveal the fascinating world of these tiny but essential organisms – and why they matter more than we think. \nThis program is free and open to all\, and is co-sponsored with The Guilford Land Conservation Trust\, but space is limited. \nPre-Registration Requested

SUMMARY:Loop 9 Trail Work at Westwoods Dunk Rock Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:A repeat of the workparty scheduled for the end of December and middle of February\, but both cancelled because of snow. This is a combination of Green Rectangle blazing work and ‘trail enhancements’ that’s needed where the trail follows the southern edge of the Great Marsh. Paul will bring the blaze materials and nails. As we’ll probably want to cut small logs to ‘outline’ sections of the trail that are difficult to follow\, a chainsaw or good handsaw will be useful. Dress for early spring conditions\, and meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nHeavy rain will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:Plankwalk Evaluation at Kampmeyer Laurel Hollow Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Kampmeyer Property Steward Cathy Duman reports the Kampmeyer Plankwalk is in need of repair. Dating back almost 30 years\, this bridging has been rebuilt several times\, but continues to be a maintenance issue. This work party will take a critical look at the bridge structure and plan for both temporary and long term restoration of the structure. Spring clothing and a decent set of boots is all you’ll need if you plan to join us. Meet us at the Laurel Hollow cul-de-sac entrance @ 10AM\, just off West Lake Avenue. SUMMARY:Loop 12 Evaluation at Westwoods Lower Moose Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled because of February snow\, this is part of a survey walk planned to critically review all aspects of trail condition and location throughout Westwoods\, to capture other property information (like invasive plant siting’s\, graffiti\, etc.) and unauthorized use of the property. To record this information in the field\, we plan to use the Avenza Map app\, which is available on both the Apple and Android handhelds or tablets paired with Loop 12 trail map. For the next two months\, this map is available as a free download from the Avenza Store … just search on ‘Westwoods Loop 12’ and you should find it. If you’d like to add your expertise to our land review\, download the free version of the Avenza app from the Apple or Android store\, load the map\, put on some nice comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket\, and join our walk in the woods. Plan to meet us at the lower Moose Hill Road entrance to Westwoods\, just across from Landon’s Way. Use street parking on Landon’s Way if it’s too crowded. SUMMARY:Loop 10 Trail Work - Westwoods at Upper Moose Hill Road
DESCRIPTION:Back in December\, we missed both a White Circle trail relocation as well as the removal of some graffiti near ‘Heaven’s Staircase’. The relocation needs some light hand tools like loppers\, clippers and at least one chainsaw. A hand rake will also be useful to better define the new trail. Paul will bring the blaze materials and nails as well as the paint for overspraying the graffiti. If you’d like to help\, dress optimistically for early spring weather and with good waterproof boots. We’ll meet at the Upper Moose Hill entrance to Westwoods at 10AM. Parking is limited\, so if you can’t find parking at the trail head\, head down on Lower Road and walk up the road or through the connecting trail. [est 1-1/2 – 2 hours]

SUMMARY:A Walk In A Winter Wonderland - Westwoods at Dunk Rock Road
DESCRIPTION:With Monday’s snowfall we know the trails won’t be clear to allow trail work. So instead we’ll be leading a ‘snowshoe’ hike around some of the flatter trails in Westwoods. We’ll be heading down the Blue Rectangle trail which follows the colonial Dunk Rock Road\, and returning along the Green Rectangle\, which was known as Marsh Road. Are snowshoes necessary? Probably not\, but we expect some people will have them. But good boots and warm clothes are a must. If you’d like to join this outing\, meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM. SUMMARY:** CANCELLED ** Loop 12 Evaluation - Westwoods Lower Moose Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:** CANCELLED ** \nPart of a survey walk planned to critically review all aspects of trail condition and location throughout Westwoods\, to capture other property information (like invasive plant sitings\, graffiti\, etc.) and unauthorized use of the property. To record this information in the field\, we plan to use the Avenza Map app\, which is available on both the Apple and Android handhelds or tablets paired with Loop 12 trail map. For the next two months\, this map is available as a free download from the Avenza Store\, just search on ‘Westwoods Loop 12’ and you should find it. [est. 2 – 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. We’ll also announce cancellations or schedule changes by email\, so it’s a good idea to check your mail before you leave the house. Paul also carries his cell phone (203-687-7756) on these events\, so if you’re late and want people to wait\, give him a call.

SUMMARY:** CANCELLED ** Loop 9 Trail Work - Westwoods Dunk Rock Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:** This work party has been cancelled due to snow ** \nA repeat of the workparty scheduled for the end of December\, but cancelled because of snow. Hopefully\, a ‘February thaw’ will open up the trails and allow us to finish our work on Loop 9. Dress for winter conditions\, and meet us at the Lower Dunk Rock Road entrance at 10AM\, just across from the Raspberry field parking lot. [est 2 – 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Plankwalk Evaluation - Kampmeyer Laurel Hollow Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Kampmeyer Property Steward Cathy Duman reports the Kampmeyer Plankwalk is in need of repair. Dating back almost 30 years\, this bridging has been rebuilt several times\, but continues to be a maintenane issue. This work party will take a critical look at the bridge structure and look at alternative routes for the access trail. Like the work party on the 31st\, warm clothing and a decent set of boots is all you’ll need if you plan to join us. Meet us at the Laurel Hollow cul-de-sac entrance @ 10AM\, just off West Lake Avenue. SUMMARY:Eastwoods Trail Evaluation - East Bearhouse Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Eastwoods-South property steward Ryan McEvoy reports a need for blazing of both the yellow and green Eastwoods trails. As winter conditions preclude most other trail work\, this work party will be a walk through all the GLCT trails south of East Bearhouse Hill Road. We’ll look at blazing and note any other trail issues we see that aren’t hidden by the snow. Beyond warm clothing and a decent set of boots\, not much else is needed for this walk in the woods. Meet at 10AM at the East Bearhouse Hill Road entrance to Eastwoods. [est 1-1/2 to 2 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Dudley-Barrows Woods Trail Maintenance at Reenes Way Cul-De-Sac
DESCRIPTION:Lots of blazing to do today … we need to cover the red circle\, which runs ‘from farm to farm’ and also catch the red/white connecting trail\, which doesn’t look like it’s ever been blazed. We’ll also take a critical look at a re-routing path for the white circle trail that could take it around the southern edge of the pond and not only avoid the steep slope at Reene’s Way\, but also the sunny and overgrown northern route it currently takes. Paul will bring the blaze materials and nails. If you’d like to help blaze\, you should bring along a small tool belt with places for nails\, a hammer and a stockpile of blazes. For trail routing\, good winter cloths and boots is all that’s needed. If you’d like to help\, plan to meet at the Reene’s Way cut-de-sac at 10AM. [est 2 to 3 hours] \nRain or significant snow will usually cancel any of these work parties\, so if you have questions about the schedule\, please feel free to contact me stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org or Paul Proulx pauljproulx@comcast.net on the morning of each event. SUMMARY:Winter in Broomstick Ledges
DESCRIPTION:GLCT Director Sam Mandel will lead a hike in the Broomstick Ledges area of Northwoods. This is a fairly short hike (3.5 miles)\, but a steep section and lots of walking on\, between\, and over rocks make it somewhat technical\, especially if there is snow or ice. This is a magical area\, particularly in winter. Meet at the Bluff Head parking lot on Route 77. Precipitation may cancel.
