SUMMARY:Loop 14 Evaluation - Westwoods: Upper Moose Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:This is part of a survey walk planned to critically review all aspects of trail condition and location throughout Westwoods\, to capture other property information (like invasive plant sitings\, graffiti\, etc.) and unauthorized use of the property. To record this information in the field\, we plan to use the Avenza Map app\, which is available on both the Apple and Android handhelds or tablets paired with Loop 14 trail map.  If you’d like to add your expertise to our land review\, request <<stewardship@guilfordlandtrust.org>> and load the map\, put on some nice comfortable walking shoes and maybe a jacket\, and join our walk in the woods.   We’ll meet at the Upper Moose Hill entrance to Westwoods at 10AM.  Parking is limited\, so if you can’t find parking at the trail head\, park down on Lower Road and walk up the road or through the connecting trail.  [est 2  – 3 hours]

SUMMARY:Bridge Raising - Kampmeyer: Laurel Hollow Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Just off the trail head entrance are eight\, 12ft bridge sections that span a large wetland area.  These are disappearing into the mud\, which isn’t good for either the bridges or the wetlands.  This work party will dig/pry these bridge sections out and install black locust sleepers underneath them.  Ahead of time\, some of us will be meeting at 9 at Spencer’s Creek to load the sleepers into Paul Sander’s truck for transport to the trailhead.  But if you’d like to help with the heavy work\, toss a crowbars\, pick and shovel into your car and meet us at 10 at the trailhead.  Decent boots and gloves are obviously suggested.  Please meet us at the Laural Hollow cul-de-sac entrance @ 10AM\, just off West Lake Avenue.   [est 2  – 2 -1/2 hours]

SUMMARY:Loop 14 Trail Work - Westwoods: Lower Moose Hill Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Based on the work we’re planning\, we’ve changed the meeting location to the Lower Moose Hill Road entrance\, across the street from Landon’s Way.  The work we’re planning to do is:\n \n— Reroute a super muddy area on sections of Violet Circle to higher ground.\n— Reroute on the Yellow Square south of Green Rectangle which makes the detour the blazed trail\, closing the muddy section of the original trail.\n— Close an unauthorized trail on Yellow Circle where it meets Yellow Square.\n— Dropping a small grove of dead but standing beeches.\n— Trimming overgrown Mt. Laurel (at the Yellow/Green cross trail)\n— Clear the overgrown section of the Yellow Circle at the (former) powerline crossing.\n— Additional paint needed to cover graffiti (intersection of Yellow Circle and Yellow Square)\n— Move the Trail Entrance pole at the Upper Moose Hill Road entrance closer to the road.\n— Add a cedar pole to mark the intersection of the Red Triangle and Violet Circle.  Additional blazing posts would benefit sections of the Red Triangle and Violet Circle where these trails cross under the powerline clearings.\n— Blazing is needed along the Red Triangle and Violet Circle.\n \nWe don’t expect to get this all done on Saturday (!).\n \nPaul will be bringing blazing materials and graffiti paint.  And we’ll ask Patrick Perdu to bring the trimmer for trail clearing.  We’ll also have cedar posts and a post hole digger.  Multiple chainsaws will be useful.  Please bring along the usual hammers\, clippers\, and loppers to support work you’d like to help with.  A rake or leaf blower would also be helpful.  \n \nHope to see you on Saturday morning!

SUMMARY:Removing Plastic Sheeting - Spencer's Creek
DESCRIPTION:The plastic we put down last spring appears to have done a good job in pushing back on the mugwort.  So today we will be carefully removing these sheets (or what can be salvaged from them)\, and seeding the uncovered area with native grass seed.  We invite you to come and help us remove these sheets … it’s a multi-person job\, especially if there’s a little wind\, and many bricks and wood timbers need to be collected and hopefully carted off the field and stacked nearby.  Good gloves and work boots are all that you’ll need to bring.  Please meet us at the property on Three Mile Course\, just slightly south of the Medad Stone tavern.  If there’s not enough room to pull off the road\, you can park up the road at the Cox School.  [est 2 hours]

SUMMARY:Trail Clearing & Sign Disassembly — Nut Plains: Cindy Lane Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Property Steward Doug Clark and Director Michele Millham report eight or so dead and downed trees/limbs on the yellow\, red\, white and blue trails.  Most of the trees are 10” or less\, although there is one that is probably more like 14” diameter. This is all chainsaw work\, and we’d welcome any additional sawyers who’d care to help.  Bring your saw\, 2-cycle mix and bar oil\, and maintenance tools.  A helmet & screen\, chaps and steel tipped boots are recommended for safe operation\, and meet us at the Cindy Lane entrance to Nut Plains Preserve\, just across from the pond.  If time allows\, we’ll be disassembling what’s left of the original entry sign … so a crowbar and small sledge hammer would also be helpful.   [est 2 hours]

SUMMARY:Branford Roadtrip - Hoadley Creek - Granite Road Entrance
DESCRIPTION:While there’s a tree we need to remove from nearby trails\, after we finish that small task\, we’ll be traveling to Branford to examine several installations of raised plank walk where a fiberglass decking has been used to replace pressure treated wood.  If you’d like to join us on our visit to the Supply Pond and trails on the northern side of Branford\, join in our car pool.  Anyone with interest or experience in building outdoor structures is encouraged to come!   Meet us at the Granite Road trailhead\, parking in the little lot off to the right side of the Solstice (formerly the Gables) residents parking.  This is at the very end of Granite Rd.\, off of Moose Hill Rd.  [est 2 to 3 hours]
