Generous Bequest for Conservation in Guilford

The Guilford Land Conservation Trust (GLCT) has received a $150,000 gift from the estate of longtime Guilford resident, Elizabeth O. Kyburg, who died in August.

Kyburg lived in Old Quarry, an area surrounded by Guilford’s marshes and woodlands, for 40 years and raised her children to appreciate the natural world.

“She packed us up and took us on camping trips from a very early age,” recalled her daughter, Robin Dickson. “But Westwoods was really her favorite place. Mom spent as much time as possible in Westwoods.”

“This bequest was a wonderful surprise,” said GLCT President Sarah Williams. “We will honor Liz’s memory by continuing to protect the properties that were important to her. Our board may choose to use a portion of the funds to increase the stewardship endowment.”

The endowment was created in 2010 to support properties over the long-term. GLCT is a volunteer-run non-profit that has protected 3,000 acres in Guilford since its founding in 1965. It is best known for its work in the Bluff Head and Westwoods areas.
