Children’s Art Contest

In April 2010, THE MONTH OF CELEBRATING OUR EARTH, the Guilford Land Conservation Trust invites children aged 11 years or under to express what nature means to them through art.

How to participate:

  • Draw or paint a picture of yourself, or your whole family, outside enjoying a natural place (no buildings or roads, please).
  • Entrants must be aged 11 years or under
  • Submit your drawing or painting on an 8 ½ x 11 inch sheet of paper
  • Include your name, age, and phone number on the back

How to enter:

  • Place your entry in the GLCT Art Contest Box near the exit door at Bishop’s Orchards, 1355 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CT
  • or Mail your entry (unfolded please) to Guilford Land Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 200, Guilford, CT 06437

Deadline for receipt of entries has been extended to: April 28, 2010

Winners with be announced on May 1, 2010 on this web site, all submissions will be featured on the website and the winning picture will also become the new GLCT kids’ t-shirt.

East River Woodlands Has Something For Everyone

East River WoodlandsPeter Marteka from the Hartford Curant, writes about the Trust’s East River Woodland.

“When I picture a “wolf” tree, I imagine a huge maple or a towering oak with sprawling branches taking over a patch of forest while saplings cower beneath it. A “wolf” American tulip tree, a tree that grows as straight as a ship’s mast, was a little harder to imagine — until I visited one in the Guilford Land Conservation Trust’s East River Woodlands on the border of Guilford and Madison.”

Land Trust President Williams Named “Person of the Week”

Sarah Williams was named Person of the Week by the Guilford Courier upon assuming the presidency of the Guilford Land Conservation Trust in the summer of 2009. (Note: the land trust was founded in 1965, and is entering its 45th year.)

Griffith June Bequest

The land trust is the recipient of a generous bequest from Griffith June, who passed away last September. An avid hiker, June left his home on Durham Road across from Lake Quonnipaug to the land trust. The land trust, in keeping with the terms of the bequest, plans to sell the property and use the much-needed proceeds for land acquisition. [Read more...]

Land Trust to Host New England National Scenic Trail

The dedicated effort of the Guilford Land Conservation Trust over its 44-year history to preserve 2,800 acres of open space in Guilford was a key factor in the successful campaign to establish the New England National Scenic Trail. President Barack Obama signed the legislation in March designating the trail, which will run from the summit of Mount Monadnock in southern New Hampshire to the Long Island Sound in Guilford.
