“When I picture a “wolf” tree, I imagine a huge maple or a towering oak with sprawling branches taking over a patch of forest while saplings cower beneath it. A “wolf” American tulip tree, a tree that grows as straight as a ship’s mast, was a little harder to imagine — until I visited one in the Guilford Land Conservation Trust’s East River Woodlands on the border of Guilford and Madison.”
